I've destroyed my Customhide Scholar with two years of near daily use (bag itself isn't too bad but the shoulder strap clips have worn through, and the grab handle has ripped off and the hadle reinforcing plate is starting to wear through the top flap). I need something tougher that will cope with lugging heavy weights on a daily basis (20-30lb most days), walking around 4 miles. The Saddlebacks look tough but has anyone used them on a daily basis with similar loads? I'm trying to figure out what's marketing hyperbole and how tough they are. A one off strength test doesn't give a lot of indication as to how a bag will cope put under heavy strain over a long period of time. Any experiences?

Thanks I'm largely convinced.

  • Just to check - the warranty includes normal wear and tear on strap clips and handles?

  • Is there any difference in ordering through Amazon, your website or ebay? The international shipping costs through Amazon seem much cheaper than through ebay.

  • Do you only use the dreaded UPS or is USPS a possibility for international shipping?

Hey there, they will definitely work with on the shipping cost.

Just call them and they can basically ship how you like and get you the cheapest method possible!

I recommend Dave's Deals bags, seconds, but you can't tell the difference or likely would have marked it up with use anyways.

When saddleback means tough, they really do mean tough. Ive had my thin briefcase for ~4 months now, and I have used it extensively (daily pretty much), and its holding up perfectly. Note that I dont exactly pamper the bag, I treat it the way its meant to be treated. Even though its been only 4 months, its been through significant abuse and I do see it taking me a long way.

If I had one complaint though, its that the strap clamps aren't lubricated and will start squeaking after a month or so, this of course was easily fixed with some WD40. Other than that, its tough, the handle is not going anywhere.

You are correct sir. If the straps break or the handle falls off (not that it will) we will replace it for free. The handle is reinforced to a metal plate so it is on there for good.

You can get in contact with our customer service gurus. They will be your best friend when it comes to international shipping costs. They will work with you to find the cheapest way to get your bag to you.

You can contact them at ihaveaquestion@saddlebackleather.com or you can give them a holler at 1.210.858.5210

I hope this helps

I've had a Saddelback Leather briefcase for about a year now (chestnut, which is gorgeous) and it's been fantastic! It's developing a nice "rustic" (for lack of a better word) look to it that I really find appealing. The average load that I carry is in the 5-10 pound range, and it's been great.

I've owned a SBL bag for 2 years, the messenger in coffee. SBL bags are the equivalent of a shell cordovan boot; sturdy as hell. I've carried it every day for the last 2 years, and its only now starting to soften in places, and only slightly. They are AMAZING bags. I've been complimented at random on it in every situation- From an Irish fisherman in Killybegs wearing nothing but tweed, to a guy in a raised Cadillac Coupe deVille in East Oakland. I love this bag. Love it.

Well after a bit more looking around, I couldn't see anything else that looked as strong so after a quick email (customer service on the email side seems excellent) I've ordered a large coffee briefcase. If it stands up to my punishment I'll be happy and impressed.

Thank you! I just measured the bag and even double-checked my order confirmation, definitely not the extra large.
