Where to find a good Cuban cigar in Jaimaca?

Fellow Cigar Connoisseurs....

I will be on a cruise to Jamaica in about three months. I want to try a good Cuban cigar but am afraid with the concentration of tourists there will be a plethora of fakes. Is there a good way to distinguish a Cuban? Any particular cigars I should be on the lookout for?

As a general rule when traveling in an area where there are lots of fakes (such as the Caribbean and Mexico), purchase only from a La Casa del Habano.

If there are no LCdH stores in Jamaica and you are going to Grand Cayman, visit the LCdH there.

I bought mine at the Ritz Carlton's golf course, "The White Witch". They were sealed in a box, and at those prices + the Ritz's reputation, I doubt they were fake. FYI the Ritz is in Montego Bay.

How much can I expect to pay?

Unless in an LCDH, be exceptionally wary. Try to avoid (again if not in an LCDH) the mainstays of fake Habanos, i.e. Monte #2, Cohiba Robusto, Cohiba Esplendidos, Editions Limitada, ANYTHING AT ALL with a glass-top box.

Single cigar $15 and up, discount on a whole box. I think we got "Romeo y Julieta" for like $20 a piece.

So there will be cigars that I will recognize? Such as Romeo y Julieto's that are Cuban cigars? Maybe this is a well known fact that I wasn't aware of.....very interesting.

My advice to you would be to just observe the shop from which you purchase your cigars and how they are stored. Also look at the boxes and the labels of the cigars. I paid about $7/cigar for the cubans I purchased although it's been a few years so I'm not exactly certain where I purchased them. One of the guides at the resort we stayed at put me on some very nice cigars though, since he saw me smoking some I had brought over from the States. I would also look for well known brands such as Romeo y Julietas, Montecristos, and Punches. Buy a Cuban Cohiba if you've never had one but in my opinion they aren't really anything to write home about... Honestly I don't think Cuban cigars are worth all they hype they receive....the only reason they get the buzz they do is because of the embargo.....I prefer Dominican cigars myself....but that's just a side note...
