definitely waking up earlier.. im jobless at the moment so maintaining a pattern of getting out of a bed and doing a few push ups gets me going when i could be sleeping in instead.

another good idea.. only hit the sack when its time to go to sleep. if i'm in bed for 20 minutes and haven't dozed off i get out of bed.. read something real boring for like 20-30 minutes and then try again... that usually works because otherwise i feel like i just keep counting the minutes that i havent slept.

definitely keep an issue of the economist handy to put you to sleep.

My sleep schedule during college was messed up, going to bed at 3 or 4 am every night and waking up at like 1 or 2. It took a while to change to waking up at 5:45 to make the commute to be at work by 8:30. The only way I ended up doing it was going to bed when I was tired (around 3:30), but forcing myself to wake up when I needed to at 5:45. Wasn't long before I was more than happy to be in bed and asleep by 10.

If ya need to cheat though, break a tab of benadryl in half and take it.

So, in short, to sum up my rambling post, the key is not forcing yourself to go to bed at a certain hour, but forcing yourself to wake up at an earlier hour. The getting to bed earlier will take care of itself if you do that.
This is what I did, worked great.

I've always done the wake up early trick too. In order to help me with that I would usually drink a lot of water before I went to sleep so I would have to wake up enough to drain it all out, after that it was usually pretty easy to start my day. Then I would be dead tired at night so it just naturally made me go to sleep earlier.

+1 This has always worked for me. If you want a 5:00am regimen, start waking up at 5:00am. In a few days you will be falling asleep at 10:00pm.

^ +1 to all of this.

Also, I found it very helpful to move my alarm clock as far out of reach as possible. This
forces you to get your feet on the floor.

Exactly. Going to bed earlier is counterproductive because you will toss, turn, and probably fall asleep later than you would have as when you are going to bed whenever you feel like it. The key is waking up at your new (earlier) time, and staying up.

It sucks, and you'll be dragging ass for a few days, but that's the only way I know how to do it.

One of the best ways I've found is to get a timer for a power socket and set it for 6.30. Plug the timer into a work lamp so it hovers close to your head and you'll wake up to bright light. Especially useful during the winter.

Be careful when you buy Melatonin that you don't accidentally buy Melanin.
