Film director Roman Polanski has been taken into custody on a 31-year-old US arrest warrant, organisers of the Zurich Film Festival have said.

The organisers say Polanski, 76, was detained by police on Saturday as he travelled to Switzerland from France to collect a lifetime achievement award.

Police in Zurich could not immediately confirm the information.

The organisers of the Zurich Film Festival said Polanski's detention had caused "shock and dismay," but that they would go ahead with a planned retrospective of the director's work on Sunday.

I disagree. Drugging a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of having sex with her is a crime far more serious than the "punishment" Polanski has already experienced. I don't doubt that he's a considerably talented director, but that talent should not obfuscate the gravity of his crime.

As I pointed out in the CE thread, Polanski did serve time in the psych ward at Chino as part of his plea. The idea that he went totally unpunished is popular but wrong.

For how long? I think sending pedophiles to therapy is about as effective as sending gheys to christian-run hetero conversion schools.

Uh oh. We had a long, fruitless discussion about the misuse of this term in another Polanski thread a long time back.

Samantha Geimer was Roman Polanski's victim when she was 13 years old. Geimer took part in a photo shoot for "Vogue" magazine with the Oscar winning director, and he slept with her after giving her champagne and a sedative tablet.
