I think I'm going to hold off on the strands, as I want something less formal that I can wear with jeans as well as business casual.  So, with that proviso, it's the McTavish in black or the MacNeil in walnut grain:  thoughts?

If you are going with the balmoral McTavish, you might as well go for the Strands. The MacNeil will be more casual.

I know that Walnut is a very popular color, but I lean towards a darker shade of brown for a crossover shoe. Depends on what you mean by business casual.

I wear suits at work every day, so I would wear these mostly with chinos (or occasionally with wool pants) and a blazer, or with jeans.

Ah, business casual, why didn't you say so? Sounds like you have plenty of flexibility from jeans to chinos to occasional wool pants. Walnut is a great color if you like it.

At the more casual end of business casual, I think the rough collection (specifically the Elgin) is great.

I'm a fan of the rough collection as well which is one of the reasons I've started looking at AE. They have more "dress" shoes like the balmoral oxford with casual finishes like the Elgin and McTavish. I'm optimistic that this product line will continue to grow.

Have had the Fifth Street for a while and really liking the boot. Recently purchased a pair of C&J Somervilles and since they are both pretty similar in color, I decided to do a little experiment with the Fifth Street and go from dark brown to oxblood. I'll post how the experiment comes out in a day or two! :)

Oxblood is also an excellent color; I'd like to see how it turns out.

Need some advice on whether to buy or hold off in buying a pair of AE black shoes for suits and such. My go to black business shoe is a very old Floresheim wingtip, which are ok, but they have seen better days. My back up is a pair of captoed Cole Haans (pre nike). Basically the Cole haans are my beater bad weather shoe. Anyway, I am considering the black AE park avenues or the strands for my go to shoe. The strands have the edge since the PA’s kinda look like my Cole haans.

How realistic is it to wait for ½ price sale on the PA’s or the Strands. That is, ½ price of the MSRP of $335. I think Amazon had this deal about a year ago (sale + a combo of coupons). I would even go for 2nds, but right now they are @ $220. Do these go down even further?

I guess what I’m saying is that I’m already covered right now, but a ½ price sale would make me pounce.:nodding:

I’m already covered in the bwn and burgundy colors.

Thanks in advance.

I'd go with a blucher if you want something more casual. Balmorals with jeans to me always look a bit off, like you are still wearing your office dress shoes or something.

Thanks, I appreciate all of the advice. In the end I think the style, texture and color of the MacNeil will be more versatile. We'll see when they arrive...

specifically for your stated bus/casual needs, IMO, a great choice.

The best I've seen Park Avenues and Strands on Amazon is 30% off ($225ish). Nordstrom's July Anniversary sale typically has the Park Avenue in black and Strands in walnut for $199. The Strand in black was not discounted.
