guys with the players, let me know how your heel toplifts wear. Mine wore extremely quickly to the point where I needed to put a tap on there before it got into the stack. unpleasant.

Thanks SF (a new me)

Wearing my Cliftons today for the first time in a long while. I'd forgotten how much I Iike these shoes. The fit is great for me, too

Thinking of grabbing a pair of those walnut players shoes mainly to wear with denim? Anyone have an idea of this would look? Or would you recommend another AE shoe? Thanks

i personally find them (walnut players) to be a bit narrow to wear with denim, but that's just me. i have a couple pairs of alden wingtips which are a bit chunkier in the toe, i prefer those for wearing with denim.

Those look GREAT. And unlike the 5th Ave's stubby captoe, the proportions look much more natural. For the longest time I couldn't put my finger on what it was about the 5th Ave. I didn't like. Someone here pointed out the short cap and it finally hit me. Love the Clifton.

I agree completely. For casual wear like chinos or denim, I think the Alden Longwing or AE Macneil would be a better choice. I find that a sleek shoe looks great (maybe even better) with a suit, however a more rounded, less sleek shoe can go both ways, casual or business attire. That's my main reason for wanting the Macneil, it's more versatile than my Tresana even though both are burgundy/brown brogues/wingtips shoes.

If you aren't set on a wingtip/brogue, consider the Leeds as well. Like the Alden PTB, it's a very versatile shoe and awesome in shell cordovan. You could also apply the same logic to the sleek Kenilworth compared to the less sleek Leeds.

I picked up a pair of walnut Cliftons in a prior sale. Those brown ones look much nicer IMO.

I think Edward up in Freeport thinks we are all a bunch of wackos. When I saw him this week I mentioned that I'd *heard* that they had the walnut player's on sale. You guys may remember tv2177posting about them as well as REguy. I emailed him Wed to hold a pair then showed up on Thursday to try them on. He just didn't understand how all these people knew about them and their sale price. When I told him that I also knew he just shipped a pair out, he was equally surprised, perhaps a little frightened. I even emailed him Thurs AM to tell him that I'd be up there that day, rather than Friday as I'd rescheduled a meeting due to a potential storm. I'm sure he's thinking to himself, "I really don't need to know your work schedule and can get weather reports without your assistance."

I think restraining order(s) may be forthcoming. I'm just waiting for the first guy to track him down at home or on his cell one day when he has a day off. It'll probably be me.

I own a pair of Park Avenues, but have lots of extra material around the ankle.

Here's what they look like when I apply pressure to the heel:

Without pressure the look fairly normal:

Any ideas of why this happens?

You either sized it incorrectly, not tightening the laces enough, or have extremely flat feet

Probably a combination of the three. Can you bring them back and exchange?

I'm interested in the Norwich's. I tried on a pair of 9.5 D's that my buddy has, which is my normal size for my other AE's, and I almost fell right out of them. Any recommendations of how to size down for a good fit?

Are those Tresana still available at AE stores? Not sure why, but with all the pictures I've seen flying around I'm suddenly desiring a pair.

Thanks. I got lucky with these - a member here sold them to me a couple years ago at a great price, NIB. I've not seen the walnut Cliftons, but these dark brown are nice.
And these have been polished once with Kiwi - nothing fancy. They took a beating in a desert environment but came out great after polishing.

I totally agree on the stubby captoe looking odd. I don't know why AE does it that way; maybe just a matter of taste. Honestly, I have some older J&Ms - back when they were made in the US - that have much better proportions. But now that their quality has gone downhill, I'm looking to AE to do something with a more "normal" looking captoe.

just saw these two pair of Brown Clifton as we are talking about it on Nordstrom that's on sale for $179. size 8 and 9D. someone should grab it, plus they will ship to you for free.

Clifton on Sale for $179

just pulled the trigger on the Walnut Players, should be here early next week.

patrick_b, I agree with you on the reason why I don't like the 5th ave. I picked it up because I need to find another pair to get the deal for my walnut Strand during the 2 for $300 sale, but the more I compare the 5th ave to other cap toed shoe the more I think the cap is way too short for my liking, thus decided to sell.
