I wear an 8.5 3E, and I feel that on my smaller, stubbier feet, any shoe that has a lot going on the front just tends to look too "busy" (Not really sure on the proper lingo for all the stuff going on). This would include the Strand (but not Sanford) and Mcallister/Cambridge.  Is that just me being crazy?

Nope. I measure between a 7.5C and an 8B on the Brannock and I'm very careful about what shoes I buy. My problem is opposite of yours though, since "sleek" shoes make me look like I have a woman's foot, I tend to favor the chunky ones.

Got my Dalton's in. They fit very similarly to the 5 last. Also got my shorter MacNeil's in. Holy hell that's a missized shoe. The 10.5 felt like a 12 and the 10 felt like a 9. Guess there's no 7 last for me!

Has anyone purchased from the Independence Collection? Is there really such a difference in terms of quality? I know the wheeling is a nice touch, but I would be interested to hear other comments.

That's funny - you must just have hit the sweet spot of where your foot hits the wide part of the last; then you are either over or under. I had to size up half a size on my MacNeils, but that worked for me.

My Walnut Cordovan Daltons just shipped. Should be here Friday!

I also received a shipping confirmation for my walnut shell strands. The funny thing is that it appears they've been shipped "next day" delivery. If this is true, I should receive the shoes tomorrow. :D

I won't get my hopes up though.

Haven't purchased, but I did inspect them. The longwings in particular were certainly nice, and the leather was noticeably softer, but I just can't see paying a 30% markup for slightly better leather, as I generally think AE's regular leather is pretty nice. The other touches (the wheeling, contrast sole, and brass name plate) are nice, I guess, but not something I'd pay extra for. Next time I'm at a store, I'll probably try them on to see if the better leather makes for a more comfortable shoe.

I think the name plate and contrast soles are totally silly. It's not as if they've added a fiddleback waist, they've simply painted one on. With that said, I think the new longwing looks so much better than the MacNeil. Its proportions are a lot nicer. I'm going to contact AE and see if they will make me up a shell version of this new longwing. That shoe would put the Alden LW, and the MacNeil to shame in my opinion.

That wide width advice is ridiculous. You can wear whatever the **** you want, and make it look good, if you have big enough balls to do so. The idea that a medallion toe will make your foot look out of proportion is baffling. Your foot already looks like it should be attached to Fred Flinstone's legs, some ******* brogueing isn't going to change that. Wear whatever you think looks cool and rock out with ********* out.

Curious to know: Who said that a medallion toe would make his foot look out of proportion? I didn't, and I can't see that anyone else did. I said that CERTAIN semi-brogues with CERTAIN kinds of brogueing might not give him the lengthening and narrowing effect he's looking for.

And who said that some amount of brogueing is going to make his foot look fat, but no brogueing might not? It's not a question of no brogueing or some brogueing: it's a question of the kind of brogueing. The C&J Drummond has one kind, the Strand another.

+1 Just used Natural on my Walnut Strands and it really livens them up, almost to "like new"

Agreed, I think the nameplate is a nice idea to recognize its a different line, but doesnt add any value. The reason I liked the Williams is because I dont really like the Macneil, but as you all mentioned, the markup is lot. It gets even higher when you consider that some of the popular models can be had for $150-200 as factory seconds
