Rolled. That's a good way to put it.

Here's the way I see it: the shoe can crease any way it wants to, as long as it doesn't touch the toe box. Once it does that, as far as I'm concerned, the shoe looks bad.

Long shot but what are you using for cleaning and conditioning?

I just checked my Bayfields and mine are extremely stiff in the toe cap. I treated them like a normal hunting\hiking boot for the first few months of this winter and never used trees and put them through pretty rough conditions. I agree once they start creasing (or rolling, good description) in the toe box it really changes the look in a detrimental way. I've never seen any thing like yours either.

I just realized this--it might be the way you sit. I used to sit with my feet tucked under the seat of the chair, and stopped when noticed it creased the front of my shoes. Try to examine your habits throughout the day and you might find something in there is causing the rolling.

Lots of great information. Thank you all.
Ordered my first pair of AE shoes last week - some black Park Avenues. Thought I should have some classic formal shoes for the occassions that require it. Should arrive to a local reseller for pickup this week.
I've had mostly Aldo shoes which look pretty good, fit well and (being cheaper) have rubber soles. Still a good choice for iffy weather and I wont be horribly upset if salt or stupidity distroys them.
I've had my eyes on AE for a while and I'm already thinking walnut McAllisters for my second pair.

Welcome, and great choices. Make sure to use shoe trees and give them a day or 2 between wearings, and they will give you a long working life. Mcallister is a great shoe as well, and would be a wonderful alternative to the black PA in either burgundy or walnut.

Could be, say if you tuck your feet back on the tips of shoes. I've also changed my driving habits. I try not to hit the pedals with the tip of the shoe. Instead I aim for the ball of the foot. It gives you better control too.

That's what I'm thinking might be the culprit. Feet tucked under a chair, toe of the shoe bent up all day. I too used to do that in college in running shoes, but broke myself of it after I entered the workforce.

Echo. My walnut McAllister are the most comfortable shoes I own. And one of the best looking IMO. I like burgundy and feel it fits well with most any trouser but have started moving more toward slacks that match the walnut color because of how good it looks.

No, the trees can't quite go all the way into the shoe.  They sort of bottle neck at a certain point.  I'd love if they could go all the way into the tip.  Maybe I'm not putting them in right?  I'll experiment some more, but it almost seems like you need to have a tree that's custom built for your size and last to do a good job.

I had this happen with the shoe trees (split toe) that I bought from AE as well. I found that they don't fill the shoe as well as the ones I have from cederville (which struck me as really weird) so I just plan on sticking with the latter from now on.

I'll get a shoe tree when I pick up the shoes. I'll be certain to rotate use as suggested although I expect less frequent use of the Park Avenues since I'll only wear them under somewhat ideal conditions or special occassions.
When I get the walnut McAllisters I'll need to be more diligent. I like brogue and I like the colour. I expect they'll be in rotation a lot. I had thought it would be about June when I could comfortably afford the McAllisters, but I would hate to miss out on the upcoming sale. Hmmm.
