Which pair and why?
There is an AE store five minutes away from my house so I plan on getting these today or early tomorrow. I would also like to use these black shoes for job interviews and any other formal occasion in which I will need black shoes.
Thanks

I hate the cap on the Fifth, and especially in black.  Its a nice "casual" bal in walnut and brown, but for black, i wouldn't wear them.  Go with the PA's, they are cleaner looking and much more appropriate for a black shoe that you are wearing to a funeral.  And this is coming from someone who loves a brogue cap...

Just a random Clifton update for today:

I don't wear these often enough, and I swear every time I wear them I wonder why I haven't. I think I realized today that the last shape and the toe is just elegant enough without being too pointy. And the toe cap is just about the perfect size. They also are incredibly comfortable for me.

These shoes do not get nearly enough credit.

I'm probably going to see if I can get both the black and walnut from the 2 for $300 sale...

much more appropriate? really?

One strip of broguing is making that much of a difference for you?

no one, and I repeat, NO ONE, will give a shit about your shoes at a funeral unless they are completely outlandish. no one will give a second look to a PA or FA.

Boots are like shell -- you get one pair and suddenly you really want more. nod[1].gif
Seconded. I only purchased black shell Leeds because they showed up new on eBay for a steal. I would've paid twice as much for burgundy shell. Still might, if the two pair at shoebank are still around a month or two from now...

+1.  I started with zero pairs of boots in October of last year and now I have 17 pairs.  For me, it's an addiction, an obsession that has my wife worried.  It's also been a good learning process but our finances have taken a hit since I discovered shell.  But I still like CXL a lot.  Am looking forward to seeing what AE releases this fall in the way of boots since I really feel AE doesn't have much selection in boots.

I'm not 100% sure, as I don't own any 5-last shoes, but I think they are. The 5 shoes tend to feel a little narrow to me; I think these have a little more room in the toe box. There are on the 8 last.

anyone know when the next 2 for 200 sale?

I've recently come to the conclusion that AE could create a real winner of a shoe if it created a balmoral captoe on the 8 last as part of the Independence Collection.  Sleek, elegant and just perfect for the reasons you all have mentioned in finding the Clifton's toe cap to be perfect.

IMO, the 8 last is probably AE's best.

Just got a new pair of walnut Strands. Is there anything I need to apply before wearing them? Waterproofing? And what should I get for regular care?

Try some leather conditioner to start, AE leather conditioner, Venetian Shoe Cream, or Saphir Renovateur.  Opinions will differ as to which is best, but any will do.

Great idea. I'm in complete agreement, obviously.

I was under the impression that Independence shoes were exclusively on the 3 last, but after checking the website, that is incorrect. There is no reason they couldn't do a higher quality shoe on the 8 last.

Thoughts on these? Not good?

I really want to buy my first pair of shell cordovans and I'm also looking for a bulcher long wing.
