Just got my strand from Nordstrom (shipped from AE) and have a question for you guys:

Should the heel of the shoe make full contact on the floor? (i.e. I put them on a table and only the very back of the heel makes contact)

Moreover, there is some black stuff inside the shoes, much more visible on one shoe than the other. What is it?

Nothing to worry about.  The sole will flex when you're wearing it.  Same for the interior as long as the shoe is comfortable.

Noticed this on some new BB Fifth Avenues as well. I don't remember this stuff being there on earlier models. It's actually slightly rough. New employee being too generous with the glue?

Yesterday was AE timewarp day.  Went to try on different sizes for Delrays and one of the pairs they brought out had the old black liner from a few years ago.  Wonder how long those have been sitting in the back room? 

 

Then at Nordstrom Rack they had a brand new pair of the old Evanstons, which have not been in stock anywhere for a year or more.  The only explanation I can come up with for this one is that they sat in someone's closet unworn for a few years before he decided to take advantage of AE's generous return policies.

Same here. For whatever reason, with the Elgin, I take my usual size.

What do people think of the Charleston in walnut for casual or business casual wear? I wouldn't normally be drawn to the style but they are in the spreadsheet a SA sent me for $140.

If you don't really like them, don't buy them just because they are on sale. I did this in the past with the 2 for $200, and now I have 2 pairs of shoes I dislike and never wear.

True. I guess I typically look at AE selections for business wear and have not gotten into the more casual designs. I think it would work with jeans or chinos, but I have typically worn rather blah shoes with casual clothes as I just never put much thought to them.

Got the 4th AE Shell in past month. The Macneils and Leeds fit fine in 11.5D but the brown Strand is a wee bit tight and long in 11.5D. Will for the first time, go to the AE store at lunch and actually get sized!
Likely get the Strand in a 11E and give the 11.5D back at the store.

If you like the shoe, I think it would work, but I wouldn't get it in black. What color were you thinking?

 

Other shoes that work with jeans or chinos are the Elgin and McTavish. The Elgin is currently on clearance for $219, and the McTavish is available from Nordstrom during the anniversary sale for $199. I don't normally recommend casual shoes in black, but I think the McTavish looks great in this color. It is not a "solid" black though, as it already has some patina.

Thinking about ordering the chocolate brown Amoks that are on clearance right now from AE. How do they compare sizing wise to Park Avenues? I wear an 11.5 D in PAs. Should I stick with the same size in Amoks or size up by 1/2?

Also still trying to decide about Strands vs McTavishes, but I think I need to get myself over to Nordstrom to check them out in person.
