I actually started off with a 11 E Park Avenue, and found that I had really bad pinching on the big joint of my big toe, because the natural bend point of the shoe was not far enough away from the heel. I've since switched to an 11.5 D, and they fit perfectly, with no pinching problems. So, I would just caution you to make sure that the length is right, and to judge this mainly on the heel to ball length of the shoe, as opposed to the overall length of the shoe (although of course you should always make sure your toes have enough room as well).

I am really not a fan of black bals with much going on.  I have no idea why, but I automatically think of a shoe that a priest would wear... black with all that brogueing.  With that being said, I think it is much harder to find a sharp, classy, dressy black shoe.

Magnanni Federico is probably my next purchase unless I can find something I really like.  I don't like black captoes, and the 5th Ave cap is way too pushed foward to the toe for my likings.

Pictures do not do this shoe justice, it is very sharp looking, sleek, and actually looked pretty damn good with jeans too

Hoping to pick them up in a couple weeks depending on the "sale" that they have.  If i can scoop them up for low $100's, I will.  If not, I might spend a little more time looking for the right black bal.

Eh, I'd rather wear the Park Avenue.  Magnanni doesn't do it for me.  A black cap toe on Alden's Plaza last would be better (even the Hampton).

This is key, finding a last that fits all the above. Lots of great black bal shoes that meet the aforementioned criteria but the prices arenorth of AE's MSRP; example of one below:

No offense, but it's good with jeans because it's too sleek. A bit too fashion forward for wearing with a suit. But if casual wear is your intention, then go for it.

Nice. Are those Vass, or just using Vass trees? If they are Vass, way north of AE prices.

There's a thread on this new brand called Meermin that is supposedly owned by the same people who own Carmina. Really cheap prices for welted shoes, and apparently lots of customizable options to get a black shoe you like. http://www.styleforum.net/forum/newestpost/277707

.. and that will be my last non-AE post.. wink.gif Sorry for the distraction...

I have the Hale in Black, which is a nice combination of captoe with "light" brogueing.  A very attractive shoe.  This has apparently been discontinued, but i beleive can be had at an attractive price ( I paid $199 when it was on closeout) through the Shoebank.

If you only have two switches ("3 piece suit" and "weekend wear"), then maybe the black Strand isn't for you.  But for any type of situation where you would want a black shoe but are not wearing a full-blown suit, I think the Strands work perfectly.

Just my two cents.

I guess I am at a loss to think of a situation where I want a black shoe but am not wearing a suit. Merlot or burnished brown would work perfectly well with your charcoal slacks. If you are in a work environment that is so formal that it requires black shoes, I can't see getting away with the Strand. I don't believe that many of these places actually exist.

I need some polish advice.

I have recently acquired the Jefferson and the Flatiron.  Both in Walnut.  These are my first AE shoes in walnut and I am not sure which polish is best.  I have seen the AE walnut creme and without applying it, the color just doesn't look right to me.  Any better options out there?

A lighter color polish won't change the color of the shoes. I believe AE offers 2 cream polishes that are lighter than walnut

For my fellow military patrons...the exchange catalog (AAFES) came out and in it there were coupons you may be interested in using. They have one coupon for $20 off (July 11-24) and $15 off (July 25-Aug7). Code: x2088fq for both

Not sure if it works for shoes...but it is worth a try.

I feel like this statement is entirely backwards.  I tend to think sleek = formal/suit, and not sleek = casual wear/jeans.

Has anyone seen which styles will be on sale at Nordstrom at the end of the month?
