Just received some black cordovan Leeds that I won on eBay this past Tuesday. Never worn (pristine sole, no creasing) and in a 14AA for $135 shipped -- sometimes it pays to be a really weird size. Since I'll be wearing 'em with jeans and/or in all kinds of weather, I'll probably have sole guards glued on soon.

I am... quite pleased. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Congratulations on your purchase and belay that sole guard order!
The Leeds have double layered soles and adding a rubber layer (Topy, etc) on top will make them feel like Frankenshoes.
They'll become too rigid and won't bend as you walk. Leave as is and enjoy with confidence. They can take a beating and should wear like iron.

Just got my Clifton in the mail today. The D width is a bit tight, but I can get used to it.

A couple things that I notice from the package...

No bag for AE shoes. Is this right? I remember when I tried AE at local Nordstrom store, the shoes always come out of the bag. Not that it's critical but just want to make sure I have the complete AE package.

A bit disappointed at the cringes on the ankle side. Not sure if this is normal, but I feel somebody might have worn it before.

Discoloration on the insole...

I wish I can get a pair straight from the warehouse instead of local nordstrom store (in which case, I know mine was shipped from St. Louis dept store).

Am I just expecting too much? Does anyone know how to check if a pair is a second?

if it's 1st quality you should get a shoe bag. at least you get one when yo purchase directly through AE.

I just bought the Cliftons from Nordstrom and received shoebags with mine. Mine came from a store.

Truly? My sole (heh.) experience with leather-soled shoes are PAs and some Byrons, and I always hear horror stories about taking 'em out in the rain... but if "wear like iron" is correct, I'll stop worrying about it.

Even if you were to get them covered, a cobbler would have to scuff the soles before applying the Topy layer. Therefore give them a break-in period by wearing them as is. You can always do it at a later time. I give you this heads-up because years ago I had a TOPY layer applied to a pair of Florsheim Kenmoors (now vintage) which also had double layer soles and they would no longer bend when I walked so had them taken off. If you get caught in the rain, simply rest the shoes on some newspaper and leave to thoroughly dry for a day or two and they will be fine.

Call AE. If you ask nicely, I'll bet they'll send you shoe bags.

are you referring to the crease that outlines the counter? if you are, my new ae cliftons from nordsrom had the same crease.

For me, the bigger issue with rain is the lack of traction. I just knew it was a matter of time before I fell and hurt myself badly. It really depends on how much you walk. If you live in a city and walk to work, traction is a bigger issue than if you drive.

I have about 1 1/4" in additional lenght in mine. They feel as they fit properly. The toe does have a little space but that is need to allow for the toe shape in my opinion.
