I did just pick up a pair of burgundy Cambridge, and I have the Clifton in burgundy calf. Walnut calf strands, dk brown Jeffersons, and a whole host of other random aes, but no loafers except a pair of brown veronas that are too big. I'm leaning towards brown at this point, despite having substantially more pairs of brown shoes in different shades than I do burgundy.

Thanks for the insights!

Walnut shell/Cappuccino shell brown shark/chili shark
I remembered your walnut and cap saddles, but hadn't noticed the shark saddles. Opens up a whole new dimension.
Also just notice the welt is dark brown, whereas I ordered it with Chili. smh. Today was a sad day......
Sorry to hear that, mdavis534, I hope they take good care of you.

I have burgundy shell patriots and brown shell patriots. I wear the burgundy more often. Both are great, though.

Nice--how is the fit for you?

Damn near perfect. I've never been a loafer fan as fit was an issue. But these were slightly snug at first and after just a few wears are great. I'm at a medical conference and have been on my feet for 7 hours and they feel fantastic.

Since we are talking Shell vs Calf in Burgundy and Brown, I thought I would mention my biggest frustration with the Allen Edmonds retail stores, which is their absolute lack of care of the display model shell cordovan shoes. Have you ever looked at them? They are scuffed up beyond belief and no one there seems to care about them at all. I have been to several 3-4 stores now including some of their larger stores and they all equally ignore their shell display models. Seriously, like 5 minutes of brushing every few weeks really will not kill them! I actually think that is why I don't like the AE shells as much as Alden's. Although I will say my AE Walnut Shell Strands are my favorite pair of shoes of all of time. If you go to a store, Alden treats their shoes like gold. Walk next door to an AE (almost quiet literally if you are in San Francisco) and their shells look like garbage (faded with no shine and scuffed to no end). I am just disappointed in their lack of care for their highest end shoes. Anyone else have this experience/impression?

-Mike

I agree. If it wasn't for this thread I would think that the shell used by AE was far inferior compared to Alden. The shell in the store is so dull and worn looking. More shell for us I guess!

I dont wear black suits ever. I have a few pairs of black pants that I wear with lighter or striped shirts. I wanted a pair of boots for those. I'm probably going to go cheaper since the shoes won't have high utility so it's all good.

and don't wear black pants, especially with lighter shirts, too much of a contrast that cut your body into two.

I have both as well but I find the opposite is true for me. I wear my brown shell at least 2:1 over the burgundy. Maybe even more than that.

I agree though that both are great!

Haven't heard anything yet. Fingers crossed. If they don't come through, I might go for the Neumonks in Snuff. Or maybe the Patriots. $100 is a pretty amazing deal.

I have read most of the 30,000 posts in this thread, and in my opinion this is the coolest AE shoe I have seen.
I think they are ummmmm... lets just say not my taste. I've never understood the whole "exotics" thing. Yeah, it makes your shoes unique... thats the best thing I can say about them... but to each their own... those saddle's on the other hand are gorgeous, though also not my style.
