Ultimately, the shoe will develop creases anyway. For me, it wouldn't be a deal breaker, especially given the price.
Thanks. Yeah, I know. It's just that this one is right there under the ankle. Anything I can do to smooth it a little? I'm relatively new to shoe care. Conditioner/Cleaner?

I've got another seconds dilemma. Just got my black BB strands. First off, they're supremely comfortable. More so than the standard AE Strands to my oddly shaped feet.

The thing is, there's a pretty big crease in the right side upper.

For you experts out there, is there anything I could do to mitigate this? Or is it not worth keeping? 159$ is a hell of a deal for a great-fitting shoe, and a great-fitting shoe is very hard to find for my feet. Def can't afford the full price, and this was the only second left in size 11 EEE.

What would y'all do?

You could always see if they have another pair, buy them, and decide which is best. According to many people on the forum you can get free return shipping, if not then you would have to pay about $11 to ship back the pair you don't want.

Finally! My first pair of AE, finally got to a store to be properly measured and fitted- loving my Flatirons in the 8 last, these are just elegant and comfortable like a glove. LOVE the Bourbon calf leather, what a great rich, versatile color- was loving Walnut until I saw the Bourbon in person and will be wearing mostly with darker colors and just don't feel the Walnut with that palette...

Oh- had to grab the matching belt in the Manistee Bourbon... : )

If you don't have a black dress shoe, then a black PA is a solid choice. If you don't have a medallion cap toe, then a brown or walnut Strand. I really like the mileage I get out of the brown Strand. Personal tastes vary, but I can wear the brown strand with almost anything. Walnut is SF favorite as well. Otherwise a McAllister would be a solid staple shoe as well.

ok for allen edmonds its good to have what for your two shoes? park avenue in black for the dressy formal and what else? about to make some purchases.

thanks

It depends on what you have to wear to work. Do you wear suits every day? If so, a brown 5th Ave might be a good option. If your workplace is business casual, I like the Delray in Chili, the Patriots in burgundy shell, the MacNeil in burgundy shell, and many others.

Ideally you don't want to wear a pair of shoes 2 days in a row. If you don't wear "dessy formal" that often, then you are really not going to be alternating with the Park Aves, so you will need a 3rd pair of shoes.

McAllister in whatever shade of brown floats your boat. Some would say Strand is a better top 2 shoe, but I prefer the walnut McAllister.

If we're dreamin' here I'd go special order on a Jefferson in cappuccino shell.

i don't have to dress up for work in fact i actually wear workwear to work because it goes with what i do lol. i have a few cordovan aldens already was just trying to mix it up some

i should have mention i have alden lwb in ravello, alden ptb in #8, and alden single monk strap in #8 on the way.

so right now i'm looking at park avenue in black and strand in what color? i'm probably making the purchase tomorrow so i have time to think it over.

Switch it to the Burgundy Park Ave's and then the Bourbon Strands. Or Walnut McAllisters

See this post of mine and the following 4 replies for a discussion of using products on the Elgin. I think you can safely use AE's LL, CC, or SS on them, but you're more likely to lose a little dye the further right you go. So far, I've only used LL and CC on them, but will try SS if they get dirty enough. I don't think you'll ever need to add color with polish. Cold Iron darkened his with neatsfoot oil, so that's always an option if they ever got too light from excessive cleaning, but I don't anticipate that becoming a problem.

As for various other leather products, I'd be very careful. Many contain ingredients that may unexpectedly darken or lighten them.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'll probably pick up some LL for the Elgin and keep the CC just for my McAllister and other dress models.

Chinos are borderline OK at the Big 4, IMO, if you're not client-facing, but I would try to step it up to wool trousers. Makes a world of difference.
I'm not sure he ever said that one was more proper than the other. He just said that navy with black shoes was proper conservative business dress.

I think I saw the word "the" ("Black shoes with Navy suit is the proper conservative business attire") and assumed he meant it was the best form of conservative business dress.

The three Alden selections above are spot on. :nodding:
