I picked up these shell macneils cheap with the intent of having them recrafted:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111064815881?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

They fit, but Im wondering if an 11 might be a better fit. They are not uncomfortable, but my big toe more or less touches the side of the shoe at all times, I feel that extended wear might get uncomfortable. Can I ask AE to stretch them out when I send them to recrafting?
First off, I do not think those are shell cordovan. I think the 9107 is black polished calf. There are some ripples that would lead you to believe they are shell, but there are also many creases and wrinkles which tell me this is leather, not horsie... Also, this does not have the sole/heal combination that would go with shell cordovan. Even if I am correct, that price is not bad for a par of quality macneils. As for recrafting, and your question about stretching, ask away with the recrafting specialists at AE. The worst they can say is no.

+1 not shell cordovan. Those are "corrected grain" or "polished cobbler" in AE terminology. Not bad necessarily, but definitely not shell cordovan.

As for the stretching question, Many find that they need to go up a size in length on the 7-last (Macneil last) due to the sizing issue you found.

Good evening gentlemen,
I'm going to try again...
I've been wanting to buy a split toe/apron tie for a while now to round off my collection and I seriously can't seem to decide what to get.
The Delray and the Lasalle are almost identical (few details in the shape and the heel cap), then there's the Parkway..
Help?!? Fit, style, anything?
Thank you,
Max

Did you also consider the Bradley? Of course, I just happen to like that last . . .

Bradley is tough to come by these days. The non-shell version has been discontinued for a while, and the shell version is on its way out. I tried to buy a pair a couple of days ago. They told me it would have to be MTO. I ended up with a pair of seconds (20% off also) from the Jeffersonville Outlet. I'm glad I got them. I also have the Delrays.

Perhaps an inch for larger sized shoes but probably not for a size 7 shoe. It's definitely more than a thumbnail, but my thumb isn't exactly the largest. I marked the general area where my big toe should be when I stick it up to meet the top of the shoe.
I've also worked a little on paint showing where the ball of my feet feels like it is. Should it be at where the cap toe ends? The knuckle of my big toe is about where the cap toe line is.

The ball of your foot should fit into the widest part of the shoe, since it is the widest part of your foot. The captoe line has nothing to do with gauging fit, as it is purely decoration and length of the captoe varies between styles and manufacterers. From your red mark on the photo, it looks like you are about right, but only you (or a trained shoe fitting associate) can feel where the widest part of your foot is in relation to the widest part of the shoe. It isn't hard to do though, and you should be able to feel it without going back to a shop. If you can't tell based on how your foot feels in the shoe, try squeezing the shoe along the widest part and see if you are also squeezing the widest part of your foot.

Don't place too much emphasis on where your toes end. As long as your toes aren't squeezing together or hitting anything, you should be fine. Shoe fit is based on the ball of the foot to the heel. That's why people are able to wear shoes with those with long pointy toes. For what it's worth, the area that you are saying your big toe hits is a perfectly normal location.

I did consider the Bradley, which i like a lot (at least in pictures) but the brown model in my size is extinct. They only have black and unfortunately I'm not in the market for black shoes.

For those with the shell Bradleys, are they done with the old or new AE #8 shell finishing? The ones I got from Jeffersonville definitely seem to be done with the old style of finishing. Are there any with the newer version out there?

Length looks good there. If there's a bit of discomfort in the toes, I wouldn't size down. It appears though that you can move out 1 or maybe two widths to e or eee. It will give you more room to work with.

I would suggest more than a half inch and less than an inch is good. Seems to me those shoes are a good fit although it would have been helpfull to see what they look like laced up, also bear in mind that while a half size up will not be much longer they will be roomier in the vamp. So unless those shoes are too tight across the vamp you are good to go. If they feel very tight across the vamp/instep then maybe a half size up would be in order.

I have an opportunity to pick these Mctavish up at a good price used. Are these creases typical of normal use? To me they look more pronounced than normal.

Perhaps a stupid question... Is EE a typical width for shoes in general and specifically AE shoes? I ask because while I do see it as an option for some shoes/sizes on the website, it seems like most places don't carry it and many don't talk about it. When I've looked on Amazon I see E and EEE width but rarely (if ever) EE. I ask because I think I'm in between E and EEE. When I got fitted at the AE store we first tried EEE and settled on E but he never brought out or suggested EE which is why I ask.

Thanks.
