MTO on seconds is impossible as they need to fail inspection to be seconds. Can do an MTO at sale or discontinued pricing but not sure how you could put in a customer order that you asked to not pass as firsts...

In addition, I have found the staff in my particular store neither here nor there. I suppose it comes with the territory of being interested in clothing and shoes, but I am always frustrated when I know more about the current offerings than the people trying to sell them to me.

Sounds like you had some really bad experience with AE as of late.  I would be upset if I were in your shoes. I'm still very new to AE but have always heard stories of great customer service from the company.  For my short experience, it has been very pleasant so in my (biased at this point) opinion, I think they would try to do everything they can to rectify if you escalate the issue(s).

If you haven't already, I would try calling the CS at the headquarters or the recrafting dept if they store is unable to satisfy your needs.  Please keep us posted with your experience, if you choose to go up the chain

Re: the staff, I agree. The guys in the St. Louis store are very knowledgable and helpful.

Hi, everyone.

I'm thinking of buying a pair of walnut Clifton. Is Nordstrom the only store where I can buy them?

I just got billed so hoping they ship tomorrow.  Aw yea

B) Drive on with my MTO Shaker Heights in all brown Chromexcel on a mini lug sole for $279.

This will be my last shoe purchase for a very, very long time to come. I sold my wife on option B, as it's replacing a much cheaper 3-season boot that's on its last legs. Nevertheless, I can't escape the feeling that I'll rue letting these Dundees go....

I was already leaning toward B, but it's now moot, as the Dundees (which I did not put on hold) are gone.

So the current (nearly final) makeup of the the Shaker Heights:

  • All brown Chromexcel (no offsetting panels).
  • Mini-lug rubber tap sole
  • Brown edging and matching split-reverse welt.
  • Dark brown stitching.
  • Independence lining.

Haven't yet decided on eyelets (other than ruling out speed hooks).

I'm hoping for a dressier and more comfortable (yet cheaper) version of the Alden Indy.

Oh I saw that, I thought you were saying it was somehow possible.  Disregard.

hi again. Didn't get a reply to a previous post so wasn't sure if it was just an off time, stupid question, bad picture or some combination. Thought I'd try again. I received a pair of Harrison's from amazon and was just trying to see if a small flaw at the toe cap was something worth returning over or if it would probably disappear with polish. I think these images capture it better. This is my first pair of AEs or any decent dress shoe for that matter. Thanks for any advice!

I think that small flaw on the Harrisons will polish out and not be noticeable.

On another topic, does anyone have pictures of shell burgundy Leeds?  I'd love to see them.  And, any advice on sizing compared to the 5-last (where I'm a 10D)?

I bought Clifton 1st's from an AE store in NYC about 2.5 years ago. They weren't in stock (odd size) so they were mailed to me. Not sure if this has now changed?

thank you septimus, much appreciated. While I'm here I thought I would contribute my sizing experience since it seems to be a common question for people new to the brand. I am normally an 11 and using the printable tool from the ae website I was an 11c. When I had a chance, I stopped by a local L&T to try on the Park ave. I had my eye on several shoes on the 5 last (park ave, strand). They only carried 11 in D which ended up being still too tight in the toes. 11.5D seemed more comfortable but not quite right. I wanted to try a 3 last since I thought the wider toe would suit me better. Fortunately Amazon was carrying the Harrison on sale (in 11D), which is essentially the park ave on a 3 instead of 5. I was pleased to find it fit well as I hoped. Not sure if that means the 5 is out for me or I just have to experiment more with L-W combinations. Anyway hope this is helpful to a future researcher.
