I was excited to get my shell Macneil seconds today, but unfortunately they will be going back.  Left shoe looked great, but the medallion of the right is cracked.  They also looked like they had been sitting on the shelf for a LONG time (dry, dusty, etc), though that could have been remedied with some TLC.

I'm 1 for 3 on seconds now. Beginning to think it's not worth the time, though the discounts that can be had are really deep.

Seconds are a mixed bag, ranging, in my experience, from "where is the flaw" to "you have got to be kidding me." Yours fall in the latter category.

Yeah, I still can't find the flaw in my first order!

Maybe I'll only stick to seconds that are at the store I'm ordering from, so I can ask the sales clerk to inspect the shoe before sending out.

I think a few weeks back someone explained that Allen Edmonds uses the same sole for shell and calf shoes (all ordered from Horween in bulk), which explains why non-shell shoes will have that stamp.  Can anyone confirm?

Search "jr horween shell stamp" or some combination.

The lighter welt looks great on pretty much any other model though, just not the Macneils...  But lots of people think they are gorgeous so maybe I'm crazy.

You know what? I think I'm not really into the natural welt altogether, despite being a former fan. It's the one thing about my Spiaggias I'm not crazy about. Every time I look down at my feet, it looks like those shoes are giving me a big toothy grin. Cheeky bastards!

I don't think it needs slimming at all. If you think it does though, you might as well opt for the Williams, RL Saunders (or is it Saunderson?) or the Aberdeen all made on the narrow 2 last.

I totally see you point though, but then again, the whole idea of MTO is to provide a custom-made, unique shoe to each individual client. I am happy about the outcome, but I am looking forward to seeing yours with the darker welt to compare the difference.

hey man... if you love them, more power to ya!  It definitely is worth pointing out that generally the goal on an LWB is for it to look boat-ish so that totally makes sense, just not my style.  Also, if casual is what you are going for, then you certainly achieved it with this look.

I'm not saying they are ugly at all, they are good looking shoes for sure... the color of the upper is gorgeous!

Wow these are nice! I like the contrast of the welt against the uppers. I agree that a lighter edge would take it to the next level. Maybe a natural toasted edge?

I also love the fact that the eyelets are visible. Was this specified in your MTO? Are these antique brass eyelets?

Time to wipe drool off my phone.

The brown Patriot cordovan webgems i ordered last month never made the 10/15 promised ship date. I called in about them last week to which I was told that they would have to email me an update.

No email ever came so I called in to AE late today. I was told that the uppers did not pass inspection pushing back delivery an extra couple of weeks.

I was relying on having these shoes no later than the first of the month since I;ll be travelling, but now that is in doubt.

On the flipside , all of you 2nds fiends will be glad to get a shot at a pair in 10EEE soon.

woah just my size...brown cordovan patriot u say??? excellent

Has anyone gone the MTO route for a burgundy cordovan with a chili welt? If so, could you please share pics? I am trying to work out the details of my next make up and would love to see how that combination comes together.

Anyway you can post more pics? Show up the details of the shoes.

Thanks

As you can imagine, these are pretty difficult to photograph.  Here's my attempt from this morning. I forgot to tell Allison that I wanted brown "piping" on the top line area, but that won't be noticeable w/ pants.  Also, I need to pick up a shorter pair of brown laces.

Thanks! Yes, you're right, those are antique brass eyelets, which I did specify.
