Thanks. Agreed about the price. What I'm asking, because I've never had shell before, is whether the light regions (which really are much lighter than the pictures seem to indicate) are a defect and/or whether they can be darkened? I look back at all the other recent shell pics in this thread and see much more uniform coloration.

Maybe the brantley boot....I believe I will take the weekend to make a decision. Suggestions welcomed.

Even in a size down they're wider and have more volume, or comparing to the 8.5D Larchmont on that comment?

Thanks again!

yeah you are probably right...  but who wears black pants in a business casual environment?  The fifth street in brown can be dressed down a lot more than the one in black...  but brown shoes w/ black pants in not ok...

I have personally never worn a pair of black dress pants in my life...

Cappuccion Shell Cordovan
Brass Eyelets
Chilli Split Reverse Welt
Transparent Brown Edge Trim
Wheeling and Fudging
JR Double Leather Sole

Those are some very nice looking shoes... Look strikingly similar to these: http://www.fransboonestore.com/store/alden/alden-x-frans-boone-cigar-cordovan-plain-toe

As you said it is hard to see in your pictures.  Color certainly can be adjusted to some degree, but I wouldn't expect the flexibility that you find with calfskin.  The color may well be the reason that they are seconds, but that doesn't necessarily make it "defective."  Variegated color in extreme cases in some shells can turn people off, but it's quite natural at some level, and is part of owning shell.  If the color is that off to you, I wouldn't keep them based on a hope that you can darken them to your liking.  The color will continue to change as they age as well.

+1.  Those are gorgeous.  The discoloration is not severe--if anything, it's wabi-sabi chic.

Wow. I have the same exact make up besides the eyelets coming. I can't wait, now!

I see black pants as well as black corrected grain square toes too often in the business my office and on the streets in Manhattan. Don't get me started on the number of people wearing black suits in the day time.

Looking for some recommendations about which shells to get. The following is what's available in my size at $299:

Randolph (burgundy, black)

Patriot (burgundy)

Park Ave (black)

Grayson (burgundy)

McGraw (burgundy)

Macneil (burgundy, black)

Leeds (black)

Dundee (only says "truffle" where as the rest give the color and clearly state cordovan. It's priced at $299 though, so should I assume this is shell?)

My current collection:

Black calf Strand

Walnut calf Strand

Grey Aberdeen

Walnut Shell Dalton

What do you guys think is the best way to go here? Thanks!

My first choice would be the burgundy MacNeils, then Dundees, then Patriots (Burgundy).

The Dundee is the only one that can not be bought in the future in that colour. Once it's gone, that's it.

On that note, let me know what size the Dundee is if you are not getting it.

yes... I've had this discussion with numerous people.  Thanks for the thoughtful explanation.  I don't think the rolls are for me.  In my opinion, it ruins the shape of the shoe and makes the shoes look older, and more "worn in" than they actually are, that is just my opinion though.

Just curious though, how long does it take to develop rolls in shell like the ones in those chukkas?

Ahhhh Bummer...my Amok ($109) order from mid-Sept was canceled due to high demand. AE did offer me a 10% coupon that I can use WITH the RDA sale. Decisions ... Decisions
