I love it . . . almost as much as my red Neumoks . . .

Consensus is that the McTavish fits looser than the dressier 5 last shoes, correct? My Strands are super like a glove (but not too tight) snug. Just wondering how much looser the McTavish would be. I'd probably be wearing it with thicker socks and DEFINITELY more casual.

The rough leathers will run just a bit large. I'm afraid I don't have a precise measurement for you.

Conventional wisdom is to size down a half size for the Rough collection with includes the McTavish. This was true for me.

I don't know when this became conventional wisdom. The whole size up and size down thing never worked for me. I will just tell you that you should NOT expect to get the same fit as your calf skin dress shoes even if it is the same last.

But same width?

Not everyone is a perfect "D" width. For example, I am exactly in between a "B" and "C" (which really sucks BTW). So I take my Neumoks in a "B" which is an excellent fit (all for the best as they don't make them in "C" widths except as a MTO).

Or to put it simply, I go TTS for Rough Collection shoes.

I plan on buying the McTavish sometime next year. I am an 8.5D in Strand, and after all my reading I will be trying an 8D. However, I have a friend who wears 12D in Strand, 11.5D in McTavish, but 11.5D Elgins were too small for him. I believe most people are happy with half a size down, but others prefer TTS. I don't recall many people mentioning changing widths, however.

People don't mention changing widths because we live in a society based on the "D" width shoe. (And if you're shopping at Nordstrom, they stock mainly "D" & "E" width AE shoes.) Going down 1/2 size reduces the overall girth of the shoe, including the width.

I wear a 9.5E in the 5-last. When trying to find my size in the McTavish, I tried all kinds of sizes, from 8.5E, 8.5EEE, etc until I settled on the 9E. So it wasn't from lack of trying.

CUSTOM SHOE UPDATE:

A few items, and one final kicker... I think you'll like it.

1. The deal is this: order a custom shell cordovan shoe, pay no custom charge, get free shoe trees and free shipping.
2. You must order through Kristle at the Jeffersonville outlet, and reference me (bucksfan - they know who I am) in order to get the deal.
3. The factory is offline until Jan 2, so they can accept the order if you like, but nothing will happen for 2 weeks or so.

...and...

4. We are not limited to any one color scheme, nor any one shoe model for that matter. Check out Allenedmonds.com and pick your favorite (or a couple favorites!) from the "custom shoe" area and order away.

Do we know if walnut or truffle/cappuccino is an option? I emailed the general customer service email and was told that it is not.

Walnut or truffle/cappuccino Patriots sound pretty awesome.

Also, can it be ANY AE, or just the ones under custom shoes on the site?

Thanks for coordinating this. Does the order have to be shell?
