On the other hand, I was looking to pick up the merlot McAllisters so I'm glad they were on sale for the 91st.

I couldn't justify $345 for purple suede shoes... def would've paid $199.

I already own the Walnut McAllisters... I can't get myself to get a 2nd model of the same shoe in another color. Only exception would be the Park Avenues... I have them in black but am looking for a sale on the merlot/burgundy (whatever exact color it is in).

The smell of a brand-new AE leather sole is fantastic...

After looking at those photos I had to go thumbs-up Al's comment. Y'all are some seriously lucky goons. nod[1].gif

For all those that got the gorgeous Townley's, be jealous of my 15 year old AE Margates!!  rimshot.gif

Actually, I recently gave them the Saphir strip down, Reno, and glacage treatment.  They look pretty good now.

I also have a legitimate question: the Margates are on the 3 last (same as MacNeil), if I get the MacNeil in the same size, will it fit the same?  Is there a noticeable difference between shell fit and calf fit?

Thanks in advance, gentlemen.

MacNeils are actually on the 7 last.  The Broadstreets are on the old 3 last.  I find the Mac Neil a little more roomy than the Broadstreet in the same size.  Granted, this may be because the Broadstreet is a balmoral, while the MacNeil is a blucher.

Agreed.  Very jealous these were only D width.  My big feet (12 EEE) get in the way sometimes.  Just got notice that my dark brown shell Dundees shipped.  Supposedly the same color, so hopefully soon I have another color comparison shot.

The Margates are on the 7-Last as well.  I assume he just misspoke.  The fit comparison between the 3-73 last and the 7-97 last is quite a substantial difference, though.  For what it's worth, I have the opposite experience.  My 3-73 lasted shoes are significantly roomier than my 7-97 lasted ones.

Yes, they are on the 7, and yes I did mis-type.

Same question though - Will there be any difference in fit between shell and calf shoes on the 7 last?  These Margates are 9.5E and fit very well.

Here are my AE 5ths with the encouraged high shine toe. I really like the effect so much better than before. I wasn't having much success but then added a little water and bang. I will soon be posting my before and after where I sanded the edge to remove blotchy dressing then reapplied, stand by for those pics and story.

I'm looking at picking up another pair of AE's - was planning on bourbon strands, but the recent sale on walnut mcallisters has piqued my interest. Now I'm considering getting both, though for roughly the same price I could get brown shell strands.

I've always thought the brown shell strands to be incredible, but I also like the versatility afforded by the two different colors.

Any advice?
If these are all full price, I would go with the two shoes rather than one shell and hope for a deal on the shell. I honestly wouldn't pay full price for any of the shoes though, given that there are seconds and sales on firsts. You may want to take a different approach though.

Unboxing a pair of shell shoes is even better.

So I just got my first pair of AEs!  A waxed black leather McTavish for $189 (seconds) from the Freeport store.  If I wanted to give the toes a bit of shine (while carefully avoiding the contrast stitching), what would all recommend?  I'm planning on wearing these to a casual outdoor wedding with either my charcoal or light grey suit.

ummm, I think I may do exactly that. The merlot McAllisters have been shipped and will be on my doorstep on Friday (just in time for my birthday present).

I debated incessantly over the merlot v walnut but since I already have the Bourbon Strand I needed to get a "classic". Don't get much more classic than the Merlot McAllisters except for the PA's.

I'll probably end up with walnut McAllisters too just because they are drop-dead gorgeous, albeit not as versatile as the merlot.

You seem to be in the same situation as me; just starting to build a solid rotation so I empathize with your consternation over styles/colors. Right now I have burgundy PA and bourbon Strand. Merlot Mac's come Friday and then I'll probably add a black pair before I can justify the walnut Mac's.

Same here. A few weeks back I picked up a pair of walnut McAllister because I just thought they were awesome looking. Once I saw that they went on sale I ordered a pair of the same in merlot. The walnut is very flashy and in the right situation they are perfect and I've received many positive comments thus far. However, I figured the merlot was classic and versatile and probably means I don't need a darker brown or bourbon but we'll see. They should arrive soon. Now I'm debating a nice pair of black shoes. I like the Strand in black and while I know many people may find that shoe useless (just get a black plain cap-toe like the PA, they say) I like the Strand in black and find the PA boring. But, that's down the road...

As an aside... I went back to the same shop where I picked up the walnuts only a few weeks prior and before I could even ask he credited me the difference between what I paid and the new sale price since I had purchased them so recently. Great service!
