I think if you are W in J&M (they say it's like EE), then you are probably pretty safe going with E width and not having the heel too big.
I think your idea to try 3 is good - that last is supposed to be very roomy in the toes. Also maybe look at the 4; even the 1 is wider than the 5.
Don't forget that AE offers free shipping and returns. So if there is a specific shoe in the 5 you like, maybe start by ordering that in E and EEE. Then you can move on to the other last those don't work out.
So I called AE and they suggested to try the EEE in an 8.5 for the five last. I am looking at the McAllister and McTavish styles. The Customer service agent told me that the heel in the EEE fits like a E heel. I had no problems with the D heel, so I am thinking it's not too much bigger.
Is there a big difference in the heel?

Since I have narrow feet, I don't have much experience with E or EEE widths, but, as has been mentioned before, the McTavish will run a bit looser all around. So, keep that in mind.
Also, you look like Mandy Patinkin.

I don't know about the heel (although that sounds reasonable - there's less variation in heel width than toe width), but the jump from D to EEE on the 5 last was huge in the toe box for me (I wear a 12E). When I was first looking for my AE sizing, I tried Nordstrom -- they only carry D and EEE widths, nothing in between. The D was tight, but the EEE felt like it was going to fly off my feet. The E was just right.
So if the D is right, but you can still get into it, you might find the EEE is too big in the toe box. But if it fits in the heel, then you should have a pretty good idea of whether an E will work for you.
Good luck!
GOP, excellent choice. I think the brown shell Strands are fantastic, and more encouraged by Michael Haines' comments. I'm just waiting to compare to the new shell colors (if they do actually come out), then will purchase whichever I like better.

I think I am going to try an E in size. The EEE is going to be too big in the heel.. I read the sizing wromg for heel size. I tried on a D width and it was tight, but I could lace the shoe up the entire way. The heel fit, A D width had a B heel, E width a C heel, but 2 more sizes up and it's most likely going to be a boat..
I was thinking of waiting, but finally decided, this is a pair I have been wanting for sometime. I think I have 15 pairs of AEs, and not a single pair of shell. So I am doing it. If they come out with some really amazing colors of shell, then maybe I will have to search for some more pop cans and buy another pair. :) Either way, I know I will be happy with the brown. Hopefully they do come out with a couple of new colors, but if they don't, I won't have waited around...

And I suspect I'll end up with that color anyway, no matter what color the new shell is. I'm just in no hurry and making myself wait!
I've come to the decision that I cannot wait for AE to come out with a PTB in suede any longer. The weather is changing here in southern Louisiana...the air is warming, the crawfish are boiling and I need some dirty bucks! I would love any input from you fine gents on alternative choices.
I can get these for 114.75 after a 15% discount and also would be able to try them on at the store.

I realize the quality is not top notch, so I'm open to other suggestions.

These are made in USA and goodyear welted
I have a pair of their chukkas and I am very pleased. Sizing is true to size
AE recommends their Dark Brown Premium Polish. I've used it on this boot and really like the results.
