I just got my replacement pair for walnut strands today -- they don't have the same quality issues the last ones have, but they still have a few niggles and I wanted a second opinion before I decide what to do.

There is some odd waviness in the coloration on the shoe (photo below). It's not too noticeable, but I'd feel better if someone can confirm that that will fade/even out as I condition and shine the shoe.

The other issue the the soles of the shoe -- the soles appear to be cut differently or different sizes. The photo below isn't the greatest, but I think it illustrates the point. On the right shoe, looking straight down, I can see the rim of the sole most of the way around. On the left shoe, the rim is much more hidden. The fit of the shoes themselves seem OK, but the soles are just different. I don't think it's very noticeable from someone else's perspective (i.e., not looking right down at them), so I'm leaning towards accepting it, but I'm interested in some other opinions.

I'm going to start with the assumption that these are factory seconds, and I hope you'll correct me if they aren't.

I believe the marks on the side of the shoe might be a result of the fatness of the leather becoming apparent upon stretching the upper over the last. I wouldn't expect that to completely go away, but it may be possible to work with it and enjoy it.

I don't think the sole rim will be noticeable, nor will the other flaw that I might be observing. However, you could take a side picture.

Is the toe cap of the left shoe larger (going further from the toe) than on the right shoe? I apologize if pointing that out brings it to your attention or if it's just from the perspective of the camera and relative shoe placement.

The toe cap on the left shoe looks a *little* bit longer when I do some ruler work, but it's not nearly as exaggerated as it looks in the photo. Although, not that I'm looking more closely at the toe-cap, it appears the medallion on the left shoe not as even as the medallion on the toe cap of the right... the left is shifted back and towards the instep compared to the right... grrr....

Unfortunately, these are not factory seconds. That's why I'm being kind of picky with these... $335 is a lot to spend on a pair of shoes (for me at least), and it's frustrating that I keep finding all these little things.

If you think it's probably OK on a pair for factory seconds, how does your opinion change knowing these are full price?

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone ever go through this with AE before? I set out to buy these shoes on Dec 28th... they didn't have the walnuts in my size at the store so they shipped me a factory pair, they had a variety of defects so I sent them back, and now I've got this pair that it looks like I'm going to send back... I don't particularly want to keep doing this ad infinitum...

Lots of us have returned shoes to AE before, myself included. It's unfortunate that you've had this happen twice in a row. If you're not in a hurry, I'd probably just go back to the local dealer, tell them your problems, and see if they're willing to give you a call when they received a pair worthy of your attention. In other words, let them deal with it.

For what it's worth, I had no issues with my return. I said they could repair my issue since they fit well, but they ended up shipping new shoes anyway. And they didn't tell me they shipped so I actually called them as I was getting concerned that they lost my work order. Lady on the phone says "Actually, they due to arrive at your place today". And they did :)
