Man, do those ever look nice.

Thought I would get the forums thoughts on a new pair of merlot park aves I just received. Got them straight from AE, and I generally like to hit them with some cleaner/conditioner before wearing. I was wondering if anyone had this experience of a somewhat scaley finish on the leather. The front cap toe and front of the shoe is fine and polishes well, but the back seems rough. I saw this on one other pair I received and sent back because of that and other reasons. I am going to grab some polish and try that tomorrow, but wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this. Will it clear up with polish, or is this something worth trying to send back? Thanks!

For those with multiple AEs or multiple full grain calf leather shoes in general, if you leave shoe trees in a pair of shoes that go unworn for certain seasons and thus several months...will the leather deteriorate/risk cracking without the usual conditioning and polishing one would do every few weeks or so with a shoe that is in regular rotation? Can you store shoes indefinitely without applying conditioner or leather lotion if they are not being worn?

Yes - shoes dry out sitting on the shelf. For that reason, new RTW shoes should be conditioned before wearing.

Out of season shoes should ideally be stored on the trees, in shoe bags or boxes (to prevent dust), and should definitely be conditioned before wearing.

I personally do not condition shoes sitting in the closet unworn on a specific schedule. Although some people do.

+1.  I swear I thought about polishing my walnut strands with the new bourbon polish (when it comes out) for a second or two.

I was thinking this morning - why have we not seen a dark brown shell Dalton yet?  With all the adulation the RL Lindrick gets, I think it would be an instant hit for AE. 

I for one sure hope they don't my checkbook needs a rest. I know I would have to buy it

I have about 10 pairs of shoes that Ive just kept on my shoe rack with the trees in them. Recently I have started keeping the boxes on any new shoes that I buy, so now I store any new pair with the shoe trees, in the dust bug, and in the box.

 

I have a similar question to the one above. I have a pair of the Kenilworth which I purchased a few days ago, but I won't be wearing until October. In a few months I'll start wearing them around the house to break them in. In the time being, I have them in the dust bag and stored in the box. Should I leave a pair of shoe trees in them? I can't imagine that it is needed until I start breaking them in. Anything else I should do with them until October?

 

Interesting that you have such a precise month planned for when you will start wearing the shoes!  The shoes will most likely be just fine stored away until you are ready for them.  However, if it were me, I would go ahead and put the trees in them.  Shoes sit on store shelves and in warehouses for long periods and generally don't have any problems.  However, some of the cases that can be found even in this thread where the shoes exhibit some bowing around the mouth have been theoretically attributed to long term shelf storage (and that is directly from the AE CEO).  Also, shoes are best stored resting upright on their soles, rather than resting on their sides where they could theoretically become slightly distorted.  If you are keeping them in their box where they will be resting on their sides, the trees will keep them shaped better.  In the end, it is probably fine either way since you are talking about storing them for a few months rather than a few years.  But, that is my opinion.   

 

 

Haha. Well I am wearing them for my wedding which is October. My fiance wants me to save them till then, which is fine, because I have more than enough shoes.

 

Interesting point about storing them on their side. I wish there was a way to store them upright without taking up a massive amount of space. I suppose maybe I could keep them in the bags but on my shoe rack. Maybe I'll consider that...
