i love AE, and even more i love my brown shell strands, but i might have to question what kind of consideration you really took

http://www.theshoemart.com/cgi-bin/...s&browse_vendor=1&start=0&results_per_page=96

Notable shell colors - Ravello, Color 4, Cigar Shell, and Whiskey...... plus a handful more including many Color 8's which is your typical burgundy color, and some gorgeous black shells that look almost more like a super deep midnight blue. If I am not mistaken, both companies use Horween shell cordovan.

As I clearly stated, I gave this "a lot" of consideration. Careful, even. For me its not even a matter of loving AE or Alden etc. I just think AE shell offerings look better so far. And after skimming that link in your post Im only reassured of how much more preferable Allen Edmond's shell offerings are to my eye. For me, Allen Edmond's burgundy shell beats anything Ive seen from Alden aesthetically. Im not interested in colors like whiskey and ravello, and cigar etc. They dont look good for the most part. Some, I even think look ugly. I find black shell to almost be pointless, at least in terms of appearance. But I realize they may look good to others and that others may find function for them in their wardrobe. Ive looked at them over and over again, and for some reason they just dont move me at all. I know this is contrary to the majority opinion, but it is my take on it.

Here's another AE shoe that you don't see alot of good photos of.....the Vernon.

The "Saddle Brown" color is alot more red in natural light with a good polish job. I like this shoe alot and wonder why it's not more popular.

Photo in natural light but overcast.

I think the double row of broguing on the toe is too far... for me, if they were 1/3 of the distance it would look better.

Good point and maybe that's why they're not as popular. Kinda' the same way I feel about the stubby toe cap on the Fifth and the Park.

I had not seen those shoes South Narc, but they are nice. More of a european look that is unfamiliar to American eyes, IMHO. Are they still sold?

I like your choice of shoes. I also prefer the elongated last of AE. It's just too bad I don't wear suits for work, which seem to go better with the elongated, european style.

So from the sound of it, this is more so in regards to shell color 8, burgundy, what have you... I haven't really looked that much into it, however if I am spending the money on shell, I would much rather get something other than the norm, which is why I opted for the brown strands. I however do like the other colors that Alden have to offer, especially the Ravello. So rich, luxurious, and bright looking... love it. I'll take a closer look next time to the color 8 and compare the two

I am really liking my Strands in Walnut shell! :slayer:I prefer this and brown shell than burgundy, at least in my short experience with shell models. I have 1 brown, two burgundy and three black shell models. I find the black is very useful, but somewhat boring. I generally wear my black shells with jeans (leeds and macneil). I just got the PA in black shell I will suit up with. I have the mcgraw leeds in burgundy and they are nice too. But the strands by far are my favorite which is interesting because I didn't find them as appealing in the walnut calf.

Sorry for the cell pic, but this is a section of the memo from my SA. No Leeds, but a good selection.

The Leeds were excluded form the $399 sale earlier in the year as well. Wonder why? Great price for shell Models like the MacNeil & Cambridge in any event. Thanks for sharing.

Hi All,

I just received a pair of Allen Edmonds Cliftons that I ordered off of Ebay. They're both size 10.5 D, but the two shoes appear to be slightly different. The inner sole of the left shoe is black, while the inner sole of the right shoe is cream colored. The heel of the right shoe is slightly smaller than the left, and the right shoe appears to be slightly more narrow. I'm not sure if the seller purchased each shoe individually. Does this seem typical/atypical for AE--have they changed their sizing over the years?

As of now, the fit on my right foot is slightly tigher. Will this likely even out over time? Any special tips on breaking these in so that the fit isn't irregular?

Thanks,
David
