Wolverine 744s, made by AE, in Horween shell No. 449. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Purchased these as firsts from a vendor on eBay that recently re-stocked... PM me if you want the info.
The shell color on these is a beautiful deep brown that is not as plum-like in color as the AE brown shell.
I am an 8E 5 Last and 8.5D in Daltons and the 744s in 8.5D fit perfect. The toe box is pretty roomy, so no issues with width. The toe is also not as blobby IRL as I had heard others describe and, if it is, it is fine with me.
And, to confirm, these are EXTREMELY comfortable and I could see wearing them whenever I had lots of miles to cover.
The 744 filled the gap in my boot collection for a tobacco brown, casual option.
Much like others have said, I think I have reached a critical mass point and will be hunting only for the next special edition shell or possibly a custom make-up, but no rush.
For comparison, I took a boot group shot.
Left to Right: Fifth Street (black shell), Dalton (chocolate brown calf), Fifth Street (burgundy shell), 744s (Horween 449 brown shell), Fifth Street (brown calf), Dalton (walnut shell), Dalton (walnut calf).
Anyone have the Fifth Street in black calf? I was searching for an example and found Horsey's collection with the Fifth Street in shell. Those look terrific (as does the whole collection).
Thinking of picking up the Fifth Street in black on clearance, as I think it fits nicely into my boot collection and also as a black shoe in general. My boots currently are:
- AS 87 last brown repello suede, Dainite sole
- Alden Indy brownish/reddish
- RL Lindrick shell
- Trickers "not Stow" acorn, Dainite sole
- Peal (C&J) burgundy cordovan, Dainite sole
- Wolverine 744
