Saw a pair of the 721 at the AE store in Minneapolis around a year ago and stared at them for a long time. No matter how much I stared at them I couldn't feel the love. In fact it got worse the more I looked at them and the poor wingtip design had a lot to do with it. The 744 is the captoe, not the wingtip. Was it this one (744 Limited that Mario mentioned) that you guys saw? I didn't even know these existed.

That's the one. Only mentioned it because it is AE made and it's close to Alden Cigar, per the request.

I think these are a great looking boot and almost got these.

However when it came down to it, I decided to get the Alden for JCrew Cap Toe in Cordovan instead.

Four month old walnut shell Daltons after 1st use of Saphir Reno.

1000

Decided to get some Saphir after all the hype and FedEx delivered it today so gave it a shot.  Have used Venetian Cream previously to liven up these boots and Saphir definitely gives a better shine (but AE's walnut shell really has more of a matte sheen than a shine). I'm still holding out final judgement on Saphir until I use it more and also trying it on calfskin.

Please report back on what works better on calf. I just ordered some Venetian, mostly because of I have heard good things and its cheap.

Will do.  I ordered the large can of Venetian since it was only about $19 iirc and I'd heard good things also (from Nick at Horween I think).  So far, I've been very happy with it.  But for my first use of the Saphir on AE shell, it gave a better shine than the VC.  I will report back.

You did good... It was just made and released less than a month ago so I'm going to email the shoebank just in case they have a pair in my size. General consensus seems to be that they are not cursed with the "blobby" toe like the other ones, but still have a somewhat tall toe box compared to many other boots. Thanks.

If you've seen the 744 in real life, then please ignore my following comments.  I only say this because I also was interested in the 744's based on what I'd read and pics I'd seen.  When I saw them and actually tried them on, I knew they weren't for me.  I know it's all personal taste, but to me, they look incredibly "blobby".  The toe is very, very round.  And the cap is way too small, kind of like how some complain about the PA's.  And I actually like the chunky or even blobby look of the regular Wolverine 1000-mile boots and will probably purchase one in the future.  Just my input and impression.

I've use venetian and saphir on shell and calf - numerous times.

My impressions are:

Venetian is very decent on shell; saphir reno and saphir shell cordovan cream are better. I still use both products, but saphir much more often. The Saphir products infuse moisture that venetian lacks.

Venetian is mediocre at best on calf; saphir is considerably better. I don't use Venetian on calf any longer. I use saphir reno on calf, but I also use AE and Alden products on calf.

Dang. Looks like I went with the wrong choice. Well, I can always buy the others. I guess venetian will be better than nothing...

I recently just used some shoe stretch in liquid on the inside of my daltons and it stained the insole. Anyone with advice on how to clean the stain on the insoles or should I just not worry about it?

I did the 2 coats of Neatsfoot oil and one coat of Renovateur. Should I be using polish?

No, they look great. I would suggest just using the Saphir from now on.
