My experience/method:
I am TTS 9.5D, but I do wear 5 lasted AE shoes in 9D.
For calf I mostly use split-toe trees from Alden or BB - large.
For shell I mostly use full-toe trees from AE or JAB - medium.
Doing the above, in my experience, avoids the problem you are experiencing; the medium AE trees in full-toe have much more girth than medium (or large) split-toe trees (whether Alden or BB), and the split-toes should go to the end of the shoe (they do in all of mine). The extra girth of the full toe, IMO, is nice for shell as it better "fills up" - i.e., slightly stretches - the shoe allowing for the smoothing out of rolls. And a full toe tree in large - for my shoe size - would be overall too big.

Congratulations on your new additions - great choices in my opinion.

I have always liked the brown Fifth Avenue. Now I really like the brown Patriot - thanks for the photo.

I am going to have to look at the brown Patriot and try it one. That may be my next AE purchase.

I don't dislike them, and I think CXL works well for that boot, but I got them without knowing much about CXL or thinking about it. I think some people like them for some of the same reasons as liking shell - very oily, so they don't need polishing, and while they crease, the creases tend to be very small and not visible from a distance. But I feel like the leather is a little too soft and shapeless, and as you say, it scuffs easily - although the oils help to reduce the effects if you want to put in the elbow grease. So again, I don't hate CXL, but I'd pick something sturdier for boots next time.
But I can see Mario's point, too.

I think you nailed it. Don't get me wrong I love the Bayfield in CXL, they fit better than most any other boot or shoe that I own. And look great and provide more ankle support than any of my 6-7" hikers. I find myself reaching for them more times than not for a wide range of activities. Wore my black calf Bayfield's yesterday because it was rainy and cold and realized they aren't quite as well fitting as the CXL, although they are certainly a good fit. Just wished they didn't scuff up so easily because I hate to take them out of commission for cleaning! But it is well worth it as Mario said and I've done it half a dozen times since I've had them. I use saddle soap as the first step and like to have them dry for 4-5 days after till a white bloom from the excess oil forms much like happens on shell then brush it out, apply Reno and dry again, then a light coat of HDLP. Think it may be worth changing the cleaning routine on them to shorten it out some.

Outstanding choices IMO. The Bradleys may take more like 2-3 months due to the shell shortage. But it is well worth the wait if you have to. Hopefully you will get them in the 4-6 week time frame though. I'm sure you will be very pleased when you get both of them.

That chili hale looks stunning! I'll add it to my list!

Unfortunately the Hale is no longer being made. You can still get limited sizes of the burnished walnut version on clearance at AE's website, though.

The Patriot looks quite nice, classic loafer. How's the sizing/fit for you?

Actually, this reminded me of the prior discussion here about shoe care products. I tried some Venetian Shoe Cream on my CXL Indys - sort of as a test before using on shell (which I have not done yet). At first, it left a "glaze" on the boots, but over time it has either soaked in or worn off. Now when I wear them they do seem a bit richer and fuller in color, with a little bit of a patina developing. Not sure it was necessary, but the effect wasn't bad.

I would say it is a little roomier than some other AE I have, but not significantly.  That was without socks as well.  I pretty much get a 9D in everything.

You can still get the fifth avenues on sale from Zappos for $229

I expected the loafer to fit tighter, interesting, thanks.

I ordered the Patriot, but I'm a little worried about the fit. In my experience, the fit initially should be tight, and it loosens up quite a bit after a few months. The patriot fits me just right out of the box, and I'm scared that it will be too big in the future. Any opinions?

How does it fit compared to the Fifth Avenue (5 last) you got? The AE person i spoke to said the new last for the Patriot was "narrow like the 5 last but a roomier toe box"--indicating that I should get the same size as my other AE 5 lasted shoes. Interested in whether or not you can confirm this.

Great lookings shoes by the way!

The Patriot is way too loose for me. I got the same size that I usually wear in the 5 last.
