That is a topy. It is a piece of rubber covering the leather sole. There are different opinions regarding this. I think it is very practical as the rain/water will not hurt your leather soles with the topy on. Depending on your cobbler it can cost 20+ dollars.

 

It doesn't necessarily mean they were reconstructed.

Building on this question, I will pose another one actually.  I'm looking for a black calf shoe to pair with a tux for my wedding (I've already decided against patent leather) and am basically considering the black calf AE Vernon (it's basically marketed as a black tie shoe that can be used anywhere else you might use a black cap toe bal) and a Meermin black calf wholecut.  I really like the look of black wholecuts but if you guys don't think they'd be appropriate to wear anywhere else I might stay away.

 

For comparison's sake:

 

AE Vernon (~$250 firsts)

 

 

 

 

Meermin Wholecuts (~$200)

 

 

 

Thoughts?

 

It depends on what you prefer as both are fine.  Personally, I like the Meermin as it looks a little more refined.

I have the AE Vernon's.  I love them and think that this is a very underrated AE Shoe, stylish and elegant and I far perfer this to the traditional Park Avenue that most purchase.

If it were me, I'd pounce on those Meermin wholecuts and spend what you saved on some silk laces to really do it up right. As far as I'm concerned there are two things that have no place in formalwear: broguing and open lacing. This, by the way, is where I shake my fist enthusiastically at AE for doing away with the Copley and Ritz while keeping the Mayfair as their only patent offering.

I really like the Vernon, but wouldn't wear it with a tuxedo.

(disclaimer: I've owned a tux since I was 16 and early on made really poor style choices with it, what with it being the 1990s and all, so I'm driven now to make up for it by being as correct as possible.)

I love my saddle brown Vernon's.  Very versatile shoe.

Would love some in the wild pics of both the saddle brown and black vernons! I'm thinking about the black to replace my park aves, but the saddle browns look great also from the pics I've seen

The wolverines came in Horween Cordovan color 449, so they're a nice medium-dark brown.
