For some of the 5 last shoes it is a bit high but they are cedar and it takes only a couple of minutes with sandpaper to shape them to custom fit. Cedar is pretty soft wood. At $18 each (4 for $75) they are well worth it IMO and are owned by AE, in fact they are across the street from the AE shoe factory and make the AE trees of course.

I can't speak for the shape of the shoe tree, but wanted to note something about shoe trees like the epic that have the metal knob. If you keep them in while you are polishing your shoes the knob seems to get in the way. I prefer my shoe trees without the knob in those instances. Aesthetically though, I like the look of the knob better.

I do have to admit that opening the closet and looking at all that brass is nice..... One thing I just remembered is that my shell Cambridge started to bow slightly AFTER I got them. Not bad but they flared enough when I walked that it was distracting to me. Based on one of the posts the AE CEO Paul made on AAAC I started closing the laces tight and using the epics with a fair amount of tension on the shoe while resting due to that high vamp. The bowing has disappeared and I no longer sand down the vamp on any of the trees. Actually I only did 2 as you can just loosen the laces and do the same thing to reduce tension. But I want that tension now, I feel it may be important to have.

Yep. On AE's youtube, it says to use full-toe for AE shoes and combination for other shoes. They just said that full-toe was made with AE shoes in mind.

Narrower.  I'm a 12D on the 5 last and an 11.5E for Delrays.

Can you return unworn factory seconds to as regular store (as in, not a factory/outlet store)?

You have until tomorrow evening to go to http://www.cedarvillestore.com/p-14-mens-epic-twin-tube-shoe-tree.aspx and select your shoe trees at a good discount. Note that I am a 10D and the new chart shows a S but I always take a M in the epic tree. Add 4 of them to your cart. You will need that 4th for your burgundy shell Cambridge someday anyhow.... Type in the code B3G1F and the price will drop from $99 to $75 so you get the 4th one for free.

Cold Iron, thanks to you for your helpful post above.  I was going to buy a couple of pairs of the AE trees since they're on sale and searched around for good prices but the Cedarville deal didn't show up.  And I actually prefer the Epic twin tube trees so now I have 4 pairs on order ready for my soon-to-be arriving AE #8 Daltons and JCrew Alden #8 PCT boots with two spare pairs for the future.  Really appreciate the heads up!

They would prefer that you mail them back, but if your store is nice, they will accept them. That's based on my own experience.

But shipping is free both ways, and I think it might apply to seconds, now too.

In my experience at the downtown Chicago retail stores, yes you can.  No questions asked.

Thanks so much for the very helpful response.

Shoes came today - all black! Called the shoe bank and they made it right immediately. The cap on the left Clifton, the one that was supposed to be black, was askew  - clearly the defect that made them seconds.  I'm keeping the black Strands and will have 2 pair, black and walnut - like em better anyway! If  I need something more formal in the future, I'll just have to buy another pair!

Shell Cambridges are certainly something to aspire to - thanks again for the response.

New Walnut Strands out for a spin!

And I'm a little hurt that my idea for everyone sharing a picture of their horrible old shoes (the [insert cheap shoe manufacturer here] Recovery Group for Men), preferrably next to some AE's, did not catch on, or even get one comment. musicboohoo[1].gif

Not even a smirk for my Anti Shoe Porn, or alternatively, Shoe Pornuglify (trademark and copyright mothertruckers!)?  blush.gif

So, one last attempt at some Rockport goodness.  I wore these brown Rockports probably 4 days out of five (or my black ones) for years when heading to the law office.  The saddest thing is that I actually had inherited four pair of AE's and, GET THIS, Alden 976 Shell wingtips (too big for me unfortunately, so I sold them on Ebay), but didn't know what I had until early last year.  baldy[1].gif

Without further ado, let the ugliness recommence!!

Go on! Get it out!  It will be therapeutic.

AE is having their online sale this weekend and I happen to be fairly close to their southcoast plaza store in southern california. I have their Kearney loafers in an 8.5, but I tried on the Park Avenue's in 8.5 and there was an awful pressure on the arch of my right foot. I really like AE's price/quality ratio and I want the PA's to fit. Is there any other width I should be trying that might alleviate this problem? I guess i should just go over there and try on a bunch of sizes, but it doesn't make sense to me that no size would fit my foot.
