I'm a pretty big AE fan and currently have about 10 pairs. After contacting customer support I got the reply "I will email you a UPS prepaid label to return the defective boot back to my attention. I apologize for the inconvenience. This is not typical, and the problem has been resolved."
The label they sent me looks like it was going to recrafting so kudos to AE for fixing the problem immediately at no additional expense to me! "The problem has been resolved" sounds like maybe this was a possibly a recurring problem so I just wanted to post it here. If anyone else encounters this with the the Bayfield contact customer support and they will fix it.
Fred

This will be my third pair of Kenilworth, due to heal separation. Their costumer service is great, but I'm getting tired of breaking in the same shoes. Which require careful breaking in frown.gif

The most interesting that I've been told are Hastings, Cortland, Parkland, Milford, Wendell, Burton, Fairfax, Hinsdale, Fifth Street boots, Bayfield, Dalton, Malvern.

All are between $130-160. Some are limited to black. This is the factory store, so we're talking seconds, etc.

Apparently the heel separation is happening to AE shoes manufactured this Summer.  Happened to a pair of Strands I bought at the Nordstrom sale this Summer.  The AE CEO posts on the Ask Andy forum and addressed this issue.  IIRC, he said it was caused by:  (i) issues with a glue supplier's product; and (ii) issues with how AE was glueing the heel on.  The CEO said both issues have been resolved.  Here is the link http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showthread.php?112771-Is-quality-of-Allen-Edmonds-on-the-decline/page4&highlight=allen+edmonds+quality  The CEO's post is on the last page.

I'm not crazy, that's a relief...

Glad to see they've resolved the issue.

Thanks for the heads-up on the sale! Just ordered the Malvern in brown. Had a hard time deciding between it and the Bayfield. I think I prefer it because of the less rugged sole.

Is this something they have fixed for unsold shoes?

I've got a pair of seconds on order that should ship out this friday and it would be a shame if my boots had this issue. I would imagine they would still stand by repairing seconds (a heel separation is definitely too much of a flaw to be a second)

All I can help you with is give you relatives to other AE lasts that work for me...so the Graysons are the 7 last, and for me I am a 13D in the 7 last, and a 12.5E (tough to find) in the 5 last.

I bought a pair of factory 2nd Kenilworth's during the rediscover america sale and they've held up just fine. no heel issues so far.

Ordered a pair of 11D Dalton's in walnut for 149 from the Freeport store.

Currently have Weybridge chili and Fifth Avenue walnut, which I love so looking forward to the new addition.

I'm glad Edward in Freeport is getting some business from SF! I couldn't be more pleased with the service I've received there over the years.
