These are seconds, and may have more knots and pits in the wood and be more prone to chipping. You could get a decent pair, but you never know.

I've had one of them chip on me, but do have 6 - 8 pairs that have been OK so far.

They were listed at $199 (the sign said 234 but the sticker on the display said 199) and they let me use a coupon I had to get an additional 20% off. Got the coupon from the Tanger outlet office. It did not list AE as a participating retailer but when i showed it to the girl she still let me use it. Looking at my receipt I actually paid $172 total. Wore them again today and they really are nice.

Nice - I'll have to go back to see if I can use one of the 20% off coupons, and make sure I can get them for $199 instead of the $234 that is listed on the sign. Can't beat $172 total for this suede chukka....it's just over 1/3 the price of the Alden I was looking at, and I haven't seen anything else comparable from any other maker.

I had been looking for a navy suede chukka as well, but again Alden seems like the only choice. I actually emailed AE's customer service to tell them they should offer the Amok in a navy suede version. I think this would be a hot seller because there is nothing available from anyone else even close to AE's price point. They wrote back and said they would pass the message along to their design team....I don't know if anything is going to come out of it, but it can't hurt. If anyone else is looking for a navy suede chukka at a reasonable price, send an email to AE and maybe they will actually make one! Who knows, if they see enough interest for it from their customers, it might eventually be offered at some point.

My Walnut Fifth Ave's showed up - they are gorgeous, will post pictures tonight.

Might return them tho and get the Fifth Ave's in Brown, since they will be primarily for business/biz casual use, and get a pair of either Mcallister, Strand, or Jefferson in walnut, for the versatility.

I'm sure you can order one right now, but the MTO fee is like $125. For that kind of money, I can buy an Alden.

I was wondering if anyone knows how much wider an 8e is from an 8d for a park avenue. I found a good deal for a 8e from craigslist but I'm not sure if I should get it if I fit an 8d pretty snugly

Just got the delivery of the Rutledge, really like it very comfortable and the toe box is very sleek certainly a keeper.
The inside lining on the independence collection is quite nice too and adds to the comfort of the shoe.
Only thing is as I bend my toes the crease on the left foot want to come on the cap toe, any way to stop that and move it back

Hi all,

I'm looking at a few pairs of Allen Edmonds, and am considering their slightly less expensive line which seems to use a 270deg welt vs. 360deg welt.

(For example, the AE Van Ness vs. AE Fifth Avenue).

Is there much difference between these, or not worth worrying about it? (Lasts are slightly different - 2 vs 5, but I'm more interested in hearing about the overall quality difference)

Also got the parkland, still thinking about keeping it, not that sure about how it looks, also in my usual 9.5D I get heel slippage, if I make up my mind on styling might have to size down to 9D. Not as comfortable as the Rutledge.

The van ness is part of the executive collection, which uses a rubber sole and poron insole. It also is on a narrower and shorter last, and uses a slightly less nice leather in the upper (at least for the black calfskin this is true). They also have extra brogueing around the throat of the shoe.

I actually liked my Van Ness, but the last was just too small.

I'd try both on and see which fit you better.

The 5 last is rather narrow on me, so I doubt I could go any narrower. Sad to hear that the leather's not that nice.

I'm trying to limit my dress + casual dressy shoes to just 4 or 5 pairs with a variety of colors, but am having a hard time deciding.

I'm thinking:
Black Park Avenue - for formal
Brown Strand (have) - Dor casual/dressy with jeans. Probably could wear these with business casual also.

Would like to add a walnut and burgundy. How should I mix this up?

I like the fifth avenue, but getting a pair in brown seems odd since I already have the strand which is pretty similar. Also, no burgundy available in the fifth avenue. (why I was looking at the van ness).

What should my next 2 be?
Walnut Fifth Avenue + Burgundy Mcallister?
Walnut Fifth Avenue + Burgundy Park Avenue?

Sort of wish I went with the strand in walnut, fifth avenue in brown, and then whatever in burgundy.

^ If you are limiting to those two, I'd say 5th Ave in walnut as the punch cap will go better with that.
I thought you didn't like walnut and found it too flashy. I used brown polish to mute mine a little.

Good memory. I do find walnut a bit flashy, but it's starting to grown on me now that I've gotten more adventurous wearing my brown strands.

Also, I think a simpler shoe like the fifth avenue might not be as flashy as something like the strand with tons of broguing.
