Is there any one willing to make the first post and write a little FAQ to guide new members so that we don't get as much older member/new member comflicts?

Cheers,

Fok.

One thing that would be helpful in these active fora would be to have persistent links to hall of fame/ faq posts. I think it was 2012 when I signed up because I needed to buy some new clothes. I had started buying on ebay and kept seeing the same sellers and when I googled them, I found they congregated here in the buying and selling forum.

I spent hours reading about clothing. I was 55 at the time and made it through life without knowing a lot of basics. A short list? Shell Cordovan, lasts, Oxford, Derby, Balmoral, Blucher, Goodyear, Blake, Glued, Top-grain, full-grain, dainite, Alden, other than Clarks and Doc Marteens I didn't know a single English shoemaker, tiger shark, saphir, a size difference in width is only 3/16" but in circumference, "snuff", hierarchy of shoe formality come to mind for starters. And you don't even want my list for tailored clothes.

a bit of dedicated real estate at the top or side of the page taking folks to the to right threads would be helpful. Once you're here long enough, it becomes easier to find things, but in the beginning, it was a PITA finding the right threads.

I appreciate what you guys have done with the forum and you probably are rarely thanked, so I end by saying, Thank You.

John

And you are very welcome. Unfortunately, we have relatively little control over the layout of the various units, since we use a hosted solution. We only have space for a limited number of "stickied" threads, but I've been thinking of having a HOF thread in which the first post is simple a lot of links to HOF threads....

Cheers,

Fok.

To me this seems fairly easy to do.  When the new thread starts on post #1, just link the relevant posts to the old thread with a brief description.  Perhaps after FAQ on Allen Edmonds, and some basic terms and outside links (like ShoeBank).  It would't be quite as accessible as the sidebar is on reddit, but it could be useful.

An Example of what I mean (please note I'm not using the term "review" properly, this is only as an example):

Review of McTavish in Cognac Dublin:               post #69977

Comparison of Longwing Bluchers:                    post #70395

Obviously, information more relevant than the examples listed would be what could fill the bill.

Breaking up the thread into various categories makes it too fragmented, IMO.

In terms of thread starters, I vote for @peppercorn78
 or @watchidiot
, not me. I don't think I participate in this thread quite enough these days to warrant being the new thread starter.

Good point. I'm okay either way. Was just thinking about some of the recent rants about how off track the thread gets. I agree with everyone's comments about informative this thread is. I learned a lot in the short time I've been visiting. Thanks to you and all the folks listed above for sharing.

While I am a newcomer here, I have been reading this forum for several years now. I enjoy having all of the Allen Edmonds information in one thread for an exhaustive search on the topic of interest (for example, type this into your address bar in Chrome: "site:www.styleforum.net/t/141581/ last comparison").

I would hope that a new thread would contain some of the most helpful posts from here, or a comprehensive list of links to useful posts.

Gentlemen, while I greatly appreciate the honor of being considered a pillar of our little community, I fear I must decline this opportunity. I'm currently on tour in England, and busy writing music (the only thing other than my family that I enjoy more than fine footwear) in between concerts. So now is not a good time for me to undertake a recreational curatorial assignment like this, one that I would otherwise be happy to tackle.

I nominate Dale the Watch....er.....TasselIdiot, or RichieP, who both know more about AE than I. It's a shame that we no longer hear from ColdIron, MoneyWellSpent, or GOPShoeGuy, as they are also very well versed in all things AE.

And to be perfectly honest, I haven't been keeping up with the latest styles and policies as much as in years past, and even though I love my 13 pairs (more than just one Kenilworth, but also far fewer than many others like FatTuesday and gatsu and bl@ster and jzrhwinnj) my tastes are starting to wander to other brands these days.

AYE!

Thank you @jzrhwinnj, for making me feel better about my ~30 pairs of AEs.

Soon you can read this thread without feeling temptation.  Just a few more pairs, that is.   :hide:

Tan or Cognac McTavish?  Any opinions on which to pick up?  Thanks!

Paging @watchidiot ?

I'm flattered for the nomination! While I don't post here often enough anymore and like PC have started to wander off into other brands too, I'll gladly start off the thread. It's my way to give back to the community that started this addiction and left my kids w/o their college funds.

There's going to be lots of information left behind in this thread, mostly from guys like ColdIron, MWS and GOP, sexy shell pictures from Mdubs and awesome eyelet MTOs from Blaster. I hope that the new thread can be at least a 10th as good as this thread.

So gents, apart from a link to this thread and the MTO thread, what info would you like to be available in the new thread?

Lastly, I'm not a native english speaker so please forgive any spelling or grammar gaffe here and there.

I went with the Cognac (my pics here post #69977), if I read through the forum correctly, slight preference for the Cognac around here.  Though, I wouldn't mind a pair in Tan, hmmmm....
