Does anyone know if there are Club Monaco seconds available? Some of their models are fantastic and i know with Ralph Lauren models you have to specifically request the list.

By the way, Club Monaco's black friday sale is a good way to get discounted AE shell, although I only saw the Dundees in store.

Thanks!

Wow, $465 CAD (About $350 USD) for first quality Dundees but too bad they didn't have my size. The Dundee is one of my fav AE models but I only have it in brown shell so far.

Bought some The Citys and they arrived today.

I got the mocha ones and they are a great color. Shiny all around, almost like corrected leather. Dark and classy enough to be my conservative captoe, but not so conservative as to be boring.

Alas, they fit like crap. I have Rogues that fit absolutely perfectly, and the 201 last always fits like it was made to my foot in the store, but these are super loose at the ankle, and bow out so much I can put a finger in each side. I can take them off when laced up tightly as though they were loafers.

Also, the heels are different lengths. Like 1/2" different. Enough to feel like I'm wearing a mismatched pair of shoes.

Really bummed. I was SO EXCITED about a captoe with just enough brogueing in MY last, and cheap at less than $200... but they're going back. Hopefully they'll have another pair in my size, still, and it'll fit like the Rogues.

Thought I'd add some pics to show the good and bad.

First, the color is nice:

Those scratches show in real life, not just due to the flash. This finish seems more prone to it than the dark Chili or Walnut.

Now for the bad, you can see the throats bowed even without my feet in them:

And the heel is 3/8" shorter on one than the other!  The lack of a bevel will fool your eye, but note the base of the heel is forward of the brogueing on one, and aft on the other. Very disappointing lack of attention to detail. I realize they're $90 cheaper than comparable non-sale shoes, but this is just sloppy:

A real shame about the poor quality control given their gorgeous color. :/

You aren't kidding! This is a better color than I expected. I really like the normal AE dark brown, but this Mocha color is a touch creamier. Looks like colors I see on some nice English shoes I occasionally lust after.

Anyway, it's totally to my taste, as is the overall style, so I'm going for an exchange. I don't know how it'll work with the Black Friday shoes, since they're limited edition, but I'll be SO stoked if I can get a pair that fit like my other 201s.

Alas, this is my 4th pair of AEs and I've had to do three exchanges. Two for quality, one for size. The shoes I have now are beautiful, but I had better luck with the shoebank shoes than the new, first quality, shoes! I have my fingers crossed, though. AE made good on the other issues I had and then some.

Good luck with the exchange, Moose22. I'd be very interested to hear how things turn out - I agree that the color makes them easily worth the chase and my 201-lasted Rogues are among my most comfortable and favorite AEs as well!

I have a very high instep.

I currently have the Strands in 7E and still can not get the lace gap to close without squeezing the top my foot to death.

Will going up to EE or even EEE make the shoe look less sleek?

It shouldn't since I don't think the actual width of the last changes, just the length of leather/vamps, right?

I've read that going up in widths can cause heel slippage?

If you have a very high instep, you may have to try a derby model or go to a different maker.

Living 300+ miles from a brick and mortar AE store I had been looking forward for months to trying on several of the newer 201 last offerings this weekend. Instead, today I learned the Plano store doesn't have a single 201 in 10.5E. Nothing in any of the Indy line models and nothing in anything else.

Next I asked if the had anything in the 8 last. Anything. Dude brought out an Ashton (678) and a McGregor. I asked him wasn't the McGregor on the 5 last? He assured me it wasn't. I referred him to the website and explained you could no longer depend on the next to last digit to indicate last. "Wow. When did that change?"

Up until about a year ago I could always count on finding a lot of E widths in the store. I'm told AE has quite intentionally reduced the number of non-D widths in their stores. I don't how you can expect someone to pay $495 for the new Indy's by telling them, "well, we can make you up one to try on in about four weeks."

Amen brother! Most of the brick and mortar stores are hard pressed to show me ANYTHING in an 11 EEE.

Actually, the overall width will, in fact, increase when moving up a width. You ought to try the Strand in EE or EEE.

Also, and this is a little out there, but you might consider a Strand Golf with a sole change. Same shoe but on the wider 73 last.

So, despite them fitting perfectly and having no discernible "seconds" flaw whatsoever, I returned these Brooks Brothers/AE tartan Duke loafers a few weeks ago as I just wasn't sure I wanted to have them for $170 (I had bought a pair of BB Kenwood loafers at the same time and decided to keep those, so figured I would send this pair back). But now they're down to $99, so maybe easier to justify.

I realize they are a very . . . unique looking loafer.  I have the BB Shaker Heights boots with the same signature tartan pattern, and have their signature tartan belt.  Are these just too "out there"?  How would you wear them?  I like them, I think I just need a few votes of confidence to pull them off (or, if deemed more appropriate, some sound advice to leave them alone and not buy them again).

Would definitely not wear. Even in Glasgow.

To each his own, though! smile.gif
