How did you size them?

Well, they didn't have my usual 10.5e just a 10.5d to try on for looks (which actually felt pretty good but I couldn't close the laces up tight enough). Ordered in the 10.5e which will arrive in a few days.

They seem to have more room then other 1 last shoes/boots, made for thicker socks I imagine. Did you have the same experience?

I went with my 65-last size. They definitely have some room, butbut dropping down in length wasn't really option.

Attention Everyone:

So...I am in the process of building myself a collection of AE shoes and would like to get some input on everyone's favorite styles / colors. Right now i have just purchased my first pair of First Ave boots in black calf.

I have one pair of brown dress shoes (crappy TBNY) that I would like to replace with another brown (or similar color) pair of AE shoes. Shoe bank has some pretty tempting option right now, but some feedback would be helpful as to what some of the more popular styles are to look for. Most importantly, what shoes would you stay away from / steer clear of?

You may be asking yourself why the hell do I not have proper dress shoes or more importantly a lack thereof. I recently made a big career change that took me from the field into the office and with that a need for a more business appropriate wardrobe. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for the help...

One piece of non-AE-specific (since others covered it fairly well) and, I suppose, semi-conformist advice is that if you're new to the job and it's a big change foe you, you may want to check out how others are dressing before you drop major bucks on new shoes. If you had your own personal style already, I'd say to hell with how others dress. But if you're looking for advice on style, I'd say to make sure you understand what will / won't fit in before deciding how you want to look. Shoes (especially higher quality ones) can sometimes be polarizing. Just my $0.02!

Great shoe.

Regarding the sizing on boots is it normal for a boot to fit perfectly fine but being able to stick 3 fingers into the back of the boot?

I wouldn't advise going down a length size from normal either, they seem to be the right length to me too.

I'm sure it's been said already, but what is suggested for waterproofing these puppies? I have the AE spray i bought for snuff Dundees, which is what AE says to use... but what about Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP, is this better?

HDLP is great...I would try it on the heel counter or towards the top first - just in case it darkens it...but I would go with HDLP as it soaks into the leather...the only spray I use Nano for suede. That being said I don't have a lot of experience protecting regular leathers...most of my bad weather shoes are cordovan or waxy leathers

First Avenue 2nds today for Walnut Wednesday. (Probably don't need to look too hard to figure out why these weren't firsts. Still, I'm happy with them. Now to get them conditioned and broken in.)

Those are sweet. Congrats

Nothing that polishing won't solve. I had the same issue

Thanks. And yes, a few layers of polish and they should be looking better. I originally had planned on darkening these significantly, as I have a pair of walnut Daltons. But now that I picked up the brown grain First Ave, I think I will keep the color of these the same and transition my Daltons to a nice walnut-bourbon-dark chili patina.

In a way I think you're saving them effort by specifying the sole. Otherwise they have to figure out what was on there, if it's still stocked and, if not, what the closest replacement would be.

PSA for anyone in the San Diego area. I stopped by the La Mesa Burlington Coat Factory and the AE selection was far better than what I saw a few months ago. Highlights included Bleecker Street in bourbon and Williams from the old Independence line. They also had several pairs of Weybridge in dark brown or merlot. These must be the corrected grain version as it was the most plastic like leather I've ever seen on an AE shoe.

Since these shoes (Player's Shoes) are no longer made... what's the next best thing?

I'm in need of a pair of sleek, shortwinged derby shoes!

Join the club. The ONLY short wing Derby shoe made now is the LGA, and that is not half the shoe of the Player, IMHO. Long wing shoes galore, but AE is treating the short wing like the ugly red-headed stepchild. (With apologies to all the ugly red headed step children on the forum, you know who you are.)
