Allen Edmonds Appreciation Thread - reviews, pictures, sizing, etc... - Page 4402

I think it's fair to point out specific problems with actual purchases.

What I don't like to see (and what we don't get too much of here, compared to every other SF thread) is the blanket brand bashing, or trolling. Most of SF is rather anti-AE, and it's nice that too much of that doesn't happen here. That doesn't mean we all have to overlook when things fall short. Hell questions and complaints even happen in the Edward Green thread.

Also loving the chromepack, really beautiful pull up leather.

Looks good. How's the sole on these? Is it soft? I picked up a pair of center fielders and found the sole surprisingly nice and spongy. I'm trying to stay away from those hard rubber pebbled soles. You feel every rock and crack when you walk.

Yes.

I tried to reply to someone's comment about their shell's getting messed up and the comment disappeared. I guess I have now found it. Sorry for the confusion but I have no idea how it happened.

So this thread is purely a place for appreciation? Okay.

Yeah but in the EG thread they even like the ugliest shoes as long as it has the EG logo on the footbed... :) still haven't pulled the trigger on a pair yet :(

I've actually not seen an EG shoe I couldn't appreciate the look of. Unlike JL...

Allen Edmonds 'Standish' in black shell cordovan. From the mid '90s as far as I can tell from the catalogs. Pretty cool and cleaned up really nicely as they were rough when I bout them. (eBay $35) Planning to pair with a charcoal suit for church tomorrow - too casual?

FYI, AE for RL models (Sanderson, Saunders, Singleton) are on sale on www.ralphlauren.com right now.  They come out to ~$300 (retail ~$500).  Great deal for firsts!

This was kinda my thought process too. Just because my shoes had a problem doesn't mean I don't think they're gorgeous. (There's zero chance of getting a replacement now, since it's a closeout and they no longer have my size) I wanted to share photos. Heck, half of the reason I appreciate AE is their customer service being outstanding.

Secondly, it's nice to get second (and 3rd, 4th, so on) opinions on flaws that won't instantly garner a reply about sending them back and getting another brand. We love our AEs or we wouldn't be here.

Didn't AE make a boot with linen side panels for RL a few years ago? Anyone remember the name of that model?

Not that one specifically, but I do know that the First Ave shearling boot should be arriving soon!

On the bottom of one of the shoes, they fully missed the channel for a few inches in two places when they stitched the soles onto the shoes.  Wondering if you guys think this warrants exchanging them?  Note that these are firsts, not seconds.

The channel is there to submerge the stitch below the level of the leather so the stitching doesn't directly wear on the ground, so ordinarily I would think it'd be a bigger deal.  But as you can see in the pic, this is on the back of the sole where it arches up to the heel, which hardly ever has the chance to come into contact with the ground.

Would you send these back or just wear them?

Cheers,

Kevin

You are correct about the channel protecting the stitching. If this were in the front of the sole, that comes into contact with the ground, I would exchange them. This area in the picture, however, is so far in the back it does not does not really take the same wear and should be fine.

The Illford.  It was a spinoff of the Eagle County.
