My Father and Father in Law have always bought nothing but Bostonian, newer Florsheim, Cole Haan, etc. This year for Christmas, I want to buy them their first truly quality pair of shoes. Both of them wear suits 2-4 days a week and business casual (jacket and tie) the other work days.

So my question is this:

If you were going to be given your first and only pair of AEs, which model would you want them to be?

Based on their wardrobe requirements, I'd suggest the Fifth Avenue Oxford in dark brown burnish. Unless they have to wear black. In that case, choose the same shoe in black.

My first thought was an Oxblood McAllister. Would a full brogue be too casual for a suit even an oxford?

Nah, man... That's a whole box full of AE branded plastic shoe horns. :nodding:

The AE box on top is a pair of 10D Long Branch in golden brown chromex.

Anybody wear Allen Edmonds dress shirts? How does the sizing fit? I generally wear an XXL to fit my shoulders, so if the fit is pretty loose throughout the body, I might need to drop down to XL.

Any help would be great. Not near a store, so I can't go try one on.

Is taking them into a store and letting them pick not an option? I had the same question as you for a bunch of friends (for their birthdays this year), and was fortunate enough to be able to go to the store in SF as we hung out in the city for the day. This way they could get fitted too.

No. They live 6 and 14 hours away respectively and neither is near a store.

Good to know. Any idea if they are only temporarily off the site or if they are plans for them to be discontinued soon? I am looking to make these my next purchase, but was hoping to wait a bit since buying a pair of Long Branch's during RDA.

I don't know about that. I haven't heard anything indicating that it is being discontinued, and seeing as we're just heading into boot season, I think that would be a foolish idea. There was rumor of an Odenwald 2.0, but as far as I know, it never made it off the ground.

The Odenwald is still listed on the Nordstrom site (online purchase only), so maybe it's now a Nordstrom exclusive?

They closed the wrong store. They should have closed the Summit store and kept the Leeds location. Earl is awesome and will be missed. They offered him a seasonal part-time job at the Summit. He politely told them that was not acceptable. He is looking forward to a break.

A well deserved break indeed. Looking forward to seeing your haul. Only wish I could have gotten there before the accessories got cleared out.

Not an AE collector, but earlier today I tried on a pair of these brown grain cap toe boots (First Avenue).  They are indeed sweet.  Not a fan of the price, $460 after tax, but their design is a definite improvement from several other AE boot options I've looked at.  They are sharp looking and definitely very comfortable out of the box.  The brown grain leather is very supple, but doesn't look like it will crease excessively.  Great choice old friend...
