I just ordered a pair of the Normandy, and I was absolutely floored. Online and in pictures they look kind of waxy and stiff, but in person the leather is super SUPER supple (definitely the nicest boot leather I've yet to see, without going into the shell cordovans etc.) and they are comfortable beyond belief. It's a "you need to see it to believe it" type of thing.
Also, stylistically, these boots aren't borrowing or copying from anything else. These are a modified reissue combat boot from the boots that AE used to make for the US military in the 40's; some vintage dealers in town I know have an essentially N.O.S. pair (EXTREMELY light wear) from the 40's (I know, what a find), and they are VERY similar to these. I put some black stolen riches boot laces on them, and WOW. Definitely the nicest boots I have ever owned. Compliments wherever I go, and I know that these are the type of boots I can wear every day for years on end.
Long story short, the normandy is an amazing boot, and you should see it in the flesh before you draw a conclusion.
