So you have one sentence for firsts that dismisses mosy's complaints and then dedicate an entire paragraph to seconds, which mosy says he doesn't buy. Again, this feels like you're being way too defensive.

Look, I'm not anti-AE. I have black Park Avenues and burgundy Nathans that I rotate and wear to work 3 times a week. Their quality is apparent when compared to the ubiquitous square-toed Aldo. Just don't try to shut someone down with a paragraph rant on seconds when the guy is saying he's paying full retail for firsts.

I don't believe it was ever confirmed that certain lines or materials are cut and stitched in WI vs DR. However, Paul G did at one point (in the this thread or the MTO thread when they took away the no fee MTO) that they plan (planned or implemented maybe) changes to the MTO process to put their best workers on the MTO and streamline the process. I think from there it arose the assumption that DR was not involved in cordovan, indy and MTOs. Maybe there was a mention of DR not doing those types of shoes, so I may be completely off, but I've never thought there was a distinction.

My understanding is that the DR was cutting and sewing the uppers at one point because the WI factory couldn't meet the demands and was originally a way to handle the overtime that was bleeding into their margins, but it evolved to be a regular part of operations. It's been like this since I've been buying AEs which as only been about 4 years. I actually never believed the thought that the DR factory didn't work on the top line shoes. To me, while there is issue with production defects, the bigger gap has always been final inspection QC, or a difference between what is "in-spec" for AE versus what is acceptable to the SF member that causes all these "complaints" about flaws. Bottom line is, none of us know what is the acceptable reject rate for AE, what is considered "in-spec" and AE's financials look like for us to make definitive judgments.

To me, what they charge and how they run their operations is literally their business, but I think it's healthy and honestly, probably helpful for AE at some level to have the discussions about quality on the thread in order to educate members and potential buyers. I must admit, I stopped participating as much in the past few months because a lot of the thread was about flaws, etc even though AE has a really, really fantastic Fall line this year which should be the main topic of discussion. This doesn't mean that criticisms and discussion about changes in construction and value should easily be dismissed. They should just be approached with thought and a constructive mindset rather than bashing and comparing to shoes which are $100+ more expensive. I don't think anyone has even mentioned that Carmina prices in the US will go up and be near $450~500 again for calf shoes in less than a week, which makes the comparisons invalid...

Thanks! The black grain is offered, although it isn't online or in stores as of yet. I just had the sole/edging/welt changed.

The Long Branch. Or if you want something that you can bit the crap out of that is still good quality and cheaper, look into Chippawa.

Whatever. You don't even get my point. My commentary was not even directed at any one person, and not to shut anyone down.
Moving on......

Sure you weren't, pal. Quoting and replying to a person in the second person and telling him he should look at Cole Haan and Johnston & Murphy if he isn't happy with AE firsts (not seconds) is definitely not directing a comment to him and not shutting him down.

I extended my hand to you multiple times. I said I agreed with you on the value proposition of AE and that too many people are being too picky with seconds. But obviously, you are one of those people for whom compromise doesn't mean anything. Whatever indeed.

Holy shit. Are you guys done yet?

I have the Dalton boot and I got the same size as 95% of my other AE's - including the Strand - 9.5D. They fit like all the other AE's I have. The only AE's I have that are not 9.5D are the Odenwald and one pair of my McTavish, both in 9D (strangely enough, the other pair of McTavish is a 9.5D).

Just my experience.
