Just copped these from N Rack for $180. I'm very happy with the style and fit. Went up 1 size from my 5 last. They appear to be 1st quality and the price was fair.

University with a leather sole? Did AE make them this way for awhile? Nice find!

They always came with the leather sole. I think AE promoted the rubber sole more however at Nordstroms and AE stores I always saw the leather version available.

I have the same size issue with a 5 last -- high instep problems.

Anyway, at the Freeport outlet I tried on some 5 and 7 last shoes in different sizes. Going wider helped on the 5 last, but I'd swim in the heel. We put in some tongue pads to push me back into the heel a bit and it mitigated the problem. A little inelegant, but I could wear the shoes comfortably after that and I wasn't rubbing or uncomfortable.

Mostly, I decided (at the clerk's suggestion) to wait until the new models came out for this fall. He expected a couple more with higher insteps like the Rogues, which fit me fine to my Brannock size.

I'm asking because I am 8D brannock and I opted for 8E for mcallister for my pink toe comfort, but the heel is not as grippy and tight.

It is mad comfy though.

I'm a 13D on the Brannock but I take a 12D in the 5 last. Initially the shoe is snug, but break in well. I have the Park Ave's and Macalister both in a 12D. The heel slipped slightly in the beginning but as I broke them in and they settled it became less apparent.

Nice score always a fan of that shoe

Thx, I'm really excited about these. They have a more European feel but the same AE quality. Def a sleeker shoe to be worn with slim fitting suits and slacks. Much more modern and youthful than my Park Ave's

Got them for $110 shipped on eBay from dabondo1. They are no warranty, but hardly worn, looked like Firsts that were only tried on/worn around the house a few times. smile.gif

That's a fantastic deal! Great color for those shoes, too.

Hmm...don't think so. I have never ever seen a stock University with a leather sole, other than SMU. Dainite was always the stock offering on University. Maybe Nordstrom/ Nordstrom Rack had AE make some up with leather soles.

Thanks for the input gents.

Seems like 5 lasts giving problems with tight instep and/or tight in the toe box.  A partial remedy seems to be going wider but heel simultaneously gets wider too.

I was thinking a lot about it and if it's a give and take situation, I figured that I'd take comfortable toes and loose heel over tight toes and firm grip on heels.

What I noticed on my mcallister is that I tend to tighten my laces harder to compensate for the loose heel.

I have yet to try the sawtooth lacing though.  I thought that was just for aesthetics.

Proves my point precisely. 3 OPTIONS for soles. Dainite standard, to get leather or V tread is a $40 additional up charge. Stock Universities all had Dainite soles. To get leather soles cost $40 extra, so you got an even better deal.

You honestly went UP a size from the 5 to 3 last??? Most folks either go down or stay the same.

Great score though.

WOW!
Incredible find, both the price and the leather sole. I would love to have the University in a leather sole. I had to have something for inclement weather, so I just went with the standard.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like the dainite keeps the upper from fully extending with a shoe tree? I was just noticing tonight that my creases aren't laying flat on my Universities the way they do on my cap-toes or even my Florsheim wingtips. Different shoe tree gets same result.

Did Ben help you out?  He's the man - hands down best SA I've ever dealt with.  I have really similar issues - he always says "I know the 65 isn't your favorite...".  With 65-lasted bals the instep is always really tough but the heel fit is good.  I did try the E width but the heel was way off at that point (too much room).  65-lasted bluchers fix the instep issue but then I get just a little bit of heel slip, not much, but to the point where it is annoying.

Did you by any chance try anything on either the 333 or 73?  For the longest time I sort of ignored the 333 since I thought they would be way too long in length for me but I was totally wrong - I think anything I put on, Larchmont, University, etc. had no heel issues or instep issues whatsoever.  I wore my Larchmonts out of the box for like 3+ hours of non-stop walking the day after I got them.  Similar experience with the Walton.  Just a suggestion - like you said, the Rogue is supposed to address this type of issue so it's no wonder they are going to put out more styles on the 201 last.

I go up a half size in 333 from 65. Tried a 11.5D Rutledge and had to much pressure on my left pinky (the bigger foot, right was fine) 12D Harrisons fit well though.
