I believe you are correct. I guess ill just have to use the fitting guide and do some research. If they don't fit I guess they'll have to be sold.

AE offers free shipping and free returns that may be a safer choice for the first pair.

If you go to the AE web site and build a custom shoe you can see the difference in color. Burgundy is more reddish in color than merlot which is darker but they are pretty close. Here is a picture of a custom built 5th Ave with the vamp in burgundy and the rest in merlot. But as you said the burgundy is rare on AE shoes outside of shell. I do have an older pair of Shelton's that are burgundy\black however.

Wouldn't the best option to be ordering the shoe from Brooks Brothers during the upcoming semi-annual sale?  It will be $243 (30% off) as of Sunday or Monday.  If you have one nearby, you can try it on.  If you don't, they have a very good return policy as long as it is unworn (walk around on carpet to see how it fits).

Good call, might do that instead. Thanks!

However, I seriously think that one horsehair brush is OK for all colours in terms of bluffing.

I currently have 2 as well dark and light.  I just received my saphir

mahogany creme & wax and so i wasn't sure I could use that same

brush w/ the rest of my brown shoes

I use 2: 1 brush for getting the dirt out and 1 brush for shine.

I'm was in the same boat as you.  Ordered fifth avenue as my first pair of AE/Brooks Bro rebrand.

Printed out the AE guide online and sized myself...which was right along with my natural shoe size prior.  Ordered my size in 5th ave and found it was too big.  Had to re-order 1/2 size down and now fits really nice.  FYI.

Ordered my 2nd pair of AE, got the Strand in Walnut. Might get a Fifth ave in brown, but I think I'll save up for some better boots!

Always difficult with a new brand/last. From my experience, it even takes more than just the first couple of fits. For me, it takes a good 10-15 wears to really get a good fit. Once you get the right fit though, allaboutshoes is a good resource afterwards.

However, the merlot is burnished and the burgundy is polished. I think that may have some bearing on the color difference you are seeing. If you compare black polished and black custom they appear to be different colors as well.

question:

how to take care of Allen Edmonds Black Hills? they are kind of waxy leather. should i use the nornal premium shoe shine?

one thing I saw that didn't look right -

i cannot see it clearly, but is there a crack in the rubber stack heel?

if it is a crack, i think you should ask for an exchange.

First post and long time lurker :-)

I have a pair of (well cared for) Walnut Strand that are only a few months old and i just noticed the heel has a similar issue as the image posted by itsmejson. Not a big gap but definitely not what i expected from my new "investment." Can anyone comment if this is reasonable or something to have repaired?
