As it should be, but often isn't. I've literally received a second quality in better shape than a first quality. In the same shoe. It's really hit or miss with AE. Even more frustrating than the variability in quality is similar variability in sizing. I very rarely achieve the same fit within the same shoe model, let alone across models on the same last. That's why now my first inclusion criteria for seconds is fit, followed by quality issues.

I swung by the AE store here in Denver and took advantage of the $50 off sale of the Maritime boat shoes.  I already have one in Navy from a month ago, so I figured I'd get a green pair and a red pair.  They were out of the golden brown color or I might have bought them too :wow:

It's probably for the best, since I already have a tan pair of Eastports from last year still in excellent shape.  But I have to say the Maritime is FAR more comfortable (and better looking) than the Eastports.  Oh well, maybe next year.  Till then, I'll be digging the Red, Navy, and Green Maritime pairs I have now, along with the tan Eastports.  Love summer!

But if one is buying from store directly and checking the quality and fit, isn't that a better option? Only if you buy online or the store doesn't have your size in stock, its a gamble, isn't it? If I could find exactly same shoe in the store without any of the issues mentioned for $100 more and flawless condition, its not worth it(looking at my pics)?

Only the Navy in house right now, the Red and Green had to be ordered.  And it looks like I got the very last red pair in 8.5d in the nation!

When I get them in, I'll take a group shot of them, along side the Eastports and the Sperry pair I also own.  The Sperries in particular, are just a joke compared to the Maritimes.  The Sperries are really comfortable though, much more comfortable than the Eastports.  On the other hand, the Maritimes are just as comfortable as the Sperry's and look better than all of the others.

I've been wanting a pair of the Maritimes and you've just about talked me into it. My closest store doesn't typically carry my size (in almost anything). How do these compare to the 5 last?

Fits me exactly the same as the 5 last - I have a pair of Strands and Strandmok's - 8.5d for all of them.

^^^ Second this.

Happened to me more than once.  Most recently - I have two Nashuas - one first qual and one second.  Wore the first qual like 5 times and the right shoe is already showing sole separation - will probably require me to call CAC.  Seconds are flawless and I have worn them plenty already.

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this but wanted to get some thoughts:

I took a nasty cut to the upper over the weekend (a consequence of a crowded sidewalk and sharp edged-sidewalk ads). I've tried polishing and conditioning, and the cuts, while wearing, don't seem as bad now. However, there's still a rather deep cut on the toe.

Is this something a cobbler might be able to make less obvious or is it something Im just going to have to deal with?

Thanks!

Well it sounds like you knew Shoebank was seconds...so I retract my statement...for real...those seconds were terrific. If you are returning those then you really should never order from Shoebank again and just roll with the firsts...good luck and I hope you get a great pair. Classic shoe for sure.

I didn't understand the term factory seconds, I thought them as factory outlet.

Well, I think I'm gonna take this pair and compare at the store and decide if its worth the $100 upgrade. Thanks everyone.

Im no shoe expert here, but Ive been shopping with AE for long enough now to know that youre playing russian roulette if you think youre going to find, even a pair of firsts that look noticeably better than that. I dont bother with the shoebank or seconds, but if those are considered flaws, then pretty much every pair of my firsts would need to be returned..Good luck though. Hope you find the pair youre looking for.
