In regards to the seconds at a retail store topic, thanks to all of those who responded. I definitely won't even bring it up with my SA, I'll just get the difference after the Maritimes on a giftcard to get me over the $200 mark. Or if there's a surprise shoe in the sale, I'll probably just pull the trigger too.

I used Saphir fawn cordovan cream as the base color and then finished with two coats of AE chili edge dressing. I did not want to do full chili as the color is quite red by itself. Unfortunately the cordovan cream kind of blocked the edge dressing from making it an even color. I was not sure what to think at first but the splotchy finish kind of suits the casual look I am trying to accomplish. The uneven color also hides any black dye underneath that wasn't quite sanded off and it helps the transition to the black welt.

Overall I am pleasantly surprised at the end result and looking forward to finishing the second shoe this week, what do you guys think?

Before and after, cordovan bloom and all.

Comparison shots next to Alden antique edge.

Looks WAY better than the black edging.  Nice jobs!

I have been offered seconds at a retail store at the suggestion of a SA.

I was excited to get my first pair of AE Park Avenue. It was from Shoebank and possibly factory seconds. I got the shoe today and I find the shoe not finished well and some threads and roughness. Please have a look. Is it worth to keep this or return and buy from AE directly?

1) There is a thread knot at the left side above the heel.

2) Right leg

3) Left leg

4) Curve edge, unfinished

5) Threads are not clean on both the shoe bottoms.

Please need suggestions.. Thanks.

I received the sale catalog today. Discounts on Maritimes, Kirkwood, Shreveport, Cody, Eldorado, Boulder, Ventura Hey, Interstate 90, Concord ave, Rialto, and several golf shoes (Murfield village, Bearpath, Anaconda, and Renegade). I believe some of the golf shoes are new introductions.

Also some discounts on JW Hulme goods and other non-shoe items.

Those are all normal defects that make the shoes factory seconds.  All are minor, and should not have any impact on the integrity of the shoes.  Enjoy them.  They look great

Are the heels cut at one edge for AE shoes? Both my shoe heels are eroded at one end.

yes, everything you brought up is minor, even in a factory second. It's part of the deal with getting the shoe for cheap.

Can anyone with Macneils advise on the fit? Sanfords are one of my favorite lasts, but I have read these run wider/longer than other 7 lasts? I also have Cliftons and fifth aves in the rotation if anyone has those and could compare.

Yes, intentionally so.

Your shoes look great.  They are absolutely factory seconds (the fact that you purchased them from the shoebank and the shoe-shaped stamp on the sole confirm this easily [although occasionally the shoebank stocks firsts]).

I saw that magazine a few days ago but with all the posts about the Kirkwood/Maritime I figured no one would care.  Wanted to comment on a few "summery" styles -

The El Dorado / Boulder (and I'm sure soon enough another Tampa / Grand Cayman) is a pretty good driving moc.  Solid construction, etc.  I've worn them for full days with moderate walking and while the sole could be more supportive, they showed no signs of wear.  My biggest complaint about them has always been the price, but with the discount I don't think they're too bad.  The leather is pretty stiff though - I tried barefoot once and they ripped my heels to shreds.  I went a half size down and the length was still a touch on the long side.  Some people may find them too narrow.

The Ventura / I90 fit completely differently - softer material and much wider.  I went down a half size in length and with the material used and shape of the 2592 last I had some pretty bad bowing.  Really comfortable though.  The dot sole was nice too.

If you like the Lowry Hills or Maxfields the Concord Ave is pretty good in the suede versions.  The 114 last was the shortest and smallest I ever tried, so I would go TTS on these.  And you'll have some trouble if you have a high arch.

Finally, if you ever looked at the Sanibel or Steen, I thought the Rialto in person looked better than either of them.  But if you have even a moderate arch and a normal or narrow width, forget about it - the top on this goes down so low there's no way you could even get them on.  And there Italian collection, meaning only EEE.  Strange they made something like this - usually all the Italian loafers run like a full size too big, and now this.  I wish the Italian collection loved me, as much as I loved it.  (Hey it was a good movie back then.)

The St. Louis SA's wanted/offered to order seconds for me, so I suppose each store is different.

I was at a wedding last weekend and got caught in multiple rainstorms. I did my best to keep my Allen Edmonds shoes dry by immediately wiping out the water with a dry cloth. They have not been protected with anything because I read they have a natural sealant/repealant. Is there anything else I can do from keeping them from drying out? Will they be ok? Thanks.

I went one width down from my 5 last shoes. I wear a 7.5EE in my 5 last shoes and went 7.5E with my MacNeils. The arch is more pronounced in the MacNeils to me, but still comfortable.
