Fair point. Although this thread definitely had me reevaluate my spending habits. Once for the worse, and more recently for the better.

You could try a random location and see what happens. Or, call Plano tomorrow and place your order. It's going to get drop shipped to you anyway. And if there is no brick and mortar store in your state there will be no sales tax in addition to the free shipping.

I think their number is (469) 366-0020.

They won't normally do it, but SAs at retail stores CAN order seconds. It helps here to have a relationship with an SA. The fact you're also buying firsts can also help.

I placed an order for a pair of Dundee 2.0 and it got shipped out a week after even though the website says 'hand crafted for you in 8 weeks.'

Unfortunately, it got stuck at FedEx right now. ffffuuuu.gif

I have a decent relationship with my local SM. In one conversation we had a month ago, the issue of seconds came up. He basically said (a little more finesse than this) that he ran a first quality store, that he had the ability to bring in seconds but that would never happen. He's a really easy going guy too. So I would say if you get a retail store to do this, I would be really surprised. The outlets can get either.

I feel a bit strange asking the SA/SM, even those with whom I have a great relationship, to order seconds for me. Probably best to go through CAC or a shoe bank SA for seconds.

This is news to me.  I did not think that the main retail locations ever sold seconds, nor did I think the outlets/Shoebanks ever sold firsts. But I don't see how this bears on the issue of getting a retail location to honor the Fathers Day sale prices early.  As I understand it, this is a sale on firsts, not to be confused with the upcoming tent sale.

It bears on the issue because a poster above wanted to take advantage of the Amex promo, which is $50 off $200, to buy a pair of Maritime firsts (which will be $125 during the father's day sale) along with a pair of Gobi seconds, which combined would bring him over $200 but individually would not. Since the promo requires one transaction over $200, we were advising him on the different ways to accomplish that goal:

(1) Order them both through the AE CAC

(2) Order the Maritime firsts from the retail SA and buy a gift card to bring the purchase over $200 and then buy the Gobi seconds with the gift card

(3) Order both from the shoe bank SA

(4) Order both from the retail SA (which not all retail SAs are willing to do, per Neo1 above)

The tent sale has nothing to do with it, except possibly lowering the price of his Gobi seconds further.

The AE retail locations do not generally sell seconds, but some members who have exceptionally good relationships with their SAs there have been able to order seconds through their retail SA. However, as Neo1 mentioned above, that's not always the case.

I have had my retail store order in a pair of 2nds, only for test fitting, and only because a stock size wasn't available.

Yes, I'll reiterate that although I've had SAs do this for me (or offer), it is not common.

I've only had an SA do this twice. Once, an SA offered to bring a second in, although I bought a first-quality pair anyway. The other time, it was a discontinued model in shell. He was gratuitous  enough to help me get the shoe I wanted, one that simply wasn't available as a first, and I did indeed buy a second from the retail location. I'm also a hard-to-fit size, so it's not common that the store will have my size in stock anyway, and they usually have to order pairs in. I've also had another SA offer to order in a second-quality pair for fitting for styles only available with a 4-6 week wait (i.e. non-custom-MTO), but in this case the SA definitely expected me to purchase a first-quality pair.  As you might expect, these are all exceptions-to-the-rule and something one should not expect from an SA (but it is nice when they do!).

Finally finished sanding down and coloring the edge on one of my AE Patriot loafers, I figured I better stop and take a few pics before attacking the second shoe.

I used Saphir fawn cordovan cream as the base color and then finished with two coats of AE chili edge dressing. I did not want to do full chili as the color is quite red by itself. Unfortunately the cordovan cream kind of blocked the edge dressing from making it an even color. I was not sure what to think at first but the splotchy finish kind of suits the casual look I am trying to accomplish. The uneven color also hides any black dye underneath that wasn't quite sanded off and it helps the transition to the black welt.

Overall I am pleasantly surprised at the end result and looking forward to finishing the second shoe this week, what do you guys think?

Before and after, cordovan bloom and all.

Yeah - in that situation, it makes sense that your SA offered to do that for you. I would not have asked for either of those things, but it's nice that they offered them to you.

I think it looks really nice. Of course it's really hard to mimic Alden's look because of their stacked heel but you've made a good effort here! I like the way the edge finish is sort of "mottled" throughout - it looks nice, not overdone, and gives the shoe a more casual look.

I would not be so brave to do this on my own shoes...

My only suggestion is to perhaps make it a little bit darker, perhaps one more coat of chili edge dressing, or maybe a coat of brown (if you don't think it'll make it too dark).

I was thinking the same thing, maybe one more coat of chili edge dressing.

Looks like a fine piece of Walnut!  I'd say nice job, I like it a lot.
