Now that I have my first pair of Shell AE what should I use to care for the leather before we go for a walk.

Saphir renovateur or venetian cream
And going forward wax, cream polish or non and just stick to a leather conditioner.
Should I use a leather protector such as Alden leather defender?

Thanks in advance.

All I do is wipe them down with a damp cloth and brush them, followed by vigorous buffing with a soft cloth.

If there are dry spots, water welts, or scuffs, I will sometimes hit them with Bick 4 after brushing, then I'll brush again and buff vigorously.

At the shoebank I've seen a few examples of a traditional 4 digit style with a leading "8" + a different price. For example, this PA: http://www.shoebank.com/FactorySecondInventory.php?STY=85615S&DIM=3E&SIZE=075

It's the same as the black PA style number but with an 8 in front plus a different price ($294 instead of $299). I've seen this before with a strand pair with a leading 8 that was $65 less than the regular $299. Is there anything to this?

Agreed.  I usually take a 9.5E or a 9EEE in most AE shoes, but was ok with a 9.5D in the Shaker Heights (only width available in the Brooks Brothers make up).

It may be an alternate sole configuration, e.g, danite.

I would recommend giving it some Alden leather defender before stepping out in the elements.  I did not apply any and wore my burgundy shell leeds on a damp morning.. stepped thru wet grass and almost had a heart attack (not really but it was a stressful moment... haha)

finish looked horrible at work, but i was able to brush/polish them back up to normal when i got home.  Since then I applied some Alden leather defender on all of my shoes boots (shell, calf) for a little peace of mind

Other than the leather defender, no need to apply anything else before wearing (after broken in).  After each wear I just brush, wipe down with a damp cloth, brush, polish... and only use venetian or saphir revovateur if needed.. enjoy them!

There are dark brown shell and bugundy shell Dundees in 12 E for $399. That's pretty sweet!

So all of the shell cordovan appears to be $399 now on Shoebank.

Btw, just ordered a pair of Kirkwood boat shoes in golden brown from SB.  I'd love a pair in navy!

I actually just got a pair of the Maritime boat shoes in navy off eBay for $75 shipped to Canada, really excited to check them out. Also really sad I missed out on the McKinley in golden brown when they were dirt cheap at the Shoebank. I kind of think they were more versatile compared to the Kirkwood.

Just ordered these shell 2nds and noticed the one cap toe is significantly shinier. Is this something that was covered up or just less buffing

It should get better with time if regular brushing and buffing. You might need to put a small bit of saphir cordovan cream every now and then. Some parts of the shell are a little shinier than others regardless, but the cap should shine up eventually.

Some of my shell shoes get a little hazy on some panels after sitting for a while. It's just oil coming to the surface. Hit them with a horsehair brush and very nice shine will come to life.
