Great pick up! I got these last spring, and they look flawless still. Easily one of my favorite loafers. I've never used anything on them either. Not even brushed.

Can someone comment on the fit of the different shoes on the 8 last - I tried on the AE Carlyle and it was a great fit, but I really didn't like the style - I am interested in the Vernon, Delray, or Clifton - I know sometimes shoes on the same last fit slightly different - THANKS

Long time lurker, first time poster. :)

I'll be pulling the trigger on my first real pair of AE's this weekend.

Looks like the consensus is the Strands in Walnut is a good first AE shoe to get. I work in a casual environment. Typically wear either jeans, kahkis, or  dress slacks to work.

Nordstroms for $288 right now. Good deal or is there a better one out there now or soon to be?

I also have a $50 gift card to Jos. A Banks I could use,  but looks like they only carry 6 styles of AE and the Strand is not one of them.

Great forum and thread!

$288 for the Strand in any color is a fantastic deal. You're unlikely to see that sale again anytime soon.

Nordstrom typically only puts one color of the Strand on sale in their July anniversary sale, but it has been Walnut before. Not sure what it'll be this year. Either way I'd go with the current Nordtrom sale.

Personally I'd go with Dark Chili for the Strand. Walnut is great but not quite as versatile. Although with jeans, khakis, and slacks you can usually get away with Walnut.

Another option if you are interested in Strand is to try The Shoe Bank. The Strand for Brooks Brothers model is $199, worth a shot to see if they have them in your size. Must call to find out.

True, but those are seconds. For one's first pair of AE, unless cost is a huge issue, it's always better to see what the full-quality offering is like.

This is flat out awesome

Thanks! The BB is chili grain. I wish I had known my MacNeil size since there was a 12C walnut grain on the shoebank a while ago. The BB I got a 12D, as thats the only widths they have. The poron helps though. I wonder how the walnut and chili grain compare next to each other in the same light.

I have the BB chili grain MacNeils and love them.  Not long ago I was psyched to see a walnut grain show up at the Shoebank, as I am mildly OCD and like matched sets.  :)  When they arrived I was ecstatic at first, but they sat on my rack unworn for weeks.  Ultimately, I decided that the walnut and chili colors were too close to each other.  So, back to the Bank the walnuts went.

Thanks for that comparison. I can definitely see how they would be to similar to keep both. In my mind anyways. Out of my current rotation they're one of my favorites, and at $159 and stellar deal.

AE first still usually have some minor flaws. Quality is the same, it's usually very minor issues. Two of my seconds I can't tell what the issue was other than a singld missed punch in a medallion, which is nearly impossible to notice.

Also chili > walnut

I've had good luck with Shoe Bank as well, and they even refused to sell a pair of olive neumok's because they had a dye flaw.  They're pretty honest when you talk to them on the phone if you ask "what are the flaws?"

I wish they had actual photos of the shoes for sale though on the website or that they could email

It looks like shell is back in the shoe bank (at least in size 14AA) at the same ol' $499 price. I wonder why they disappeared a few days back, only to return.

Here is a shot I took today at my local menswear / shoe store. Ascher, Warwick, and Rogue.
