Yeah they look pretty untouched.  Nice to see them in their original form again.

I changed my mind and returned them for a pair of Bourbon Strands instead.

Well I dragged myself to a store that has AE yesterday.

Spent about 30 minutes trying on shoes with the sales associate. Explained how I am a 9E in the Strand and McAllister, fit perfectly, and tried on the 9D (they didnt have a 9E) in the Fifth Avenue. As expected, it was too big. I then tried on an 8.5D, which was the perfect length bit a touch too narrow. Meaning my 5th Ave size is 8.5E.

This particular store also stocks the Strand, so I asked the SA to bring an 8.5D and 9D strand out to compare to the 5th Ave. To her surprise, the Strand 8.5D wouldn't fit on my foot, even though the 5th Ave 8.5D was almost a perfect fit. Maybe it has something to do with the construction of the Park/5th Avenue vs the Strand/McAllister, even though they are on the same last.

Ordered an 8.5E 5th Avenue from the shoebank, we'll see how it fits (maybe the one they send me will miraculously fit the same as the other 65 last shoes and be too small... who knows).

It really sucks not living close to an AE store and being outside of the US.

I'm convinced that the broguing and the captoe on the Strand (and to some extent the McAllister) makes a difference in the fit. There's just no other explanation.

Silly rabbit; walnut polish isn't for Walnut Strands, Cognac is for Walnut Strands. smile.gif

Also, I've alternated AE Cognac with Saphir #3 Light Brown to good effect.

Wow, I really can't relate to your experience. It just doesn't make sense to me! I have Strands, Park Aves, McAllisters, Jeffersons, and they all fit exactly identically. My McTavish and Kenilworths do fit slightly looser, but still within the same ballpark.

However, I'm willing to bet that they have many more physical 5 lasts on your size than my own (10.5 3E), so that may explain the variation.

Good luck!

I have 3 different shoes on the 5 last, and while I do wear them all, they definitely fit a bit different from each other. Sizing is certainly not exact.

Also, I was at an AE store awhile back and tried on PA in my size and it was WAY too big on me. It does happen, you just have to look around sometimes.

If someone of you has a picture, can you please show what's the difference between walnut, walnut calf, and chili.  Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)  like the one on the bottom, but can't understand what color is it. It says walnut, but which one... have no idea

Maybe I have been away from this thread for too long, but as far as I know there is no walnut calf color unless you are comparing them to walnut shell, which is a different material.

Simple walnut and Burnished walnut. On their web site i see no difference in pictures) I agree, this is my first pair, so no idea about colors. Especially give that you can change a shade by using different polish cremes.

Basically, i just need to know which color are these on the bottom.

do a image reverse lookup, you'll find where thst picture is from. if guess calf due to the unpleasant orange color of the walnut.

I have a care question. On a leather sole, what's that rubber part on the heel called? I have 3 pairs of shoes and they all have slightly different shapes, but they all look like they're made to be replaced so that leather heel itself lasts longer. All of mine look like they've worn to the point where there's just a sliver left before the leather heel is exposed on the edge.

Also, is this an easy thing to replace? Usually nailed? Glued?I live in China and the cobblers in my city aren't really professional. I doubt most of them have seen shoes with leather soles, at least where I live (small city). Not sure if I should ask them to replace it or not, but if I know how they're supposed to be replaced, I could ask if they do it that particular way or another.

Agreed, I use cognac polish on my walnut AEs too. I bought two tubes of it last year when they were on clearance. I regret not buying more now. I haven't been able to find it reliably anywhere since they stopped making it.
