Just placed an order for Leeds Burgundy Shell from the shoe bank.  Been debating on a shell PTB for a while, glad to mark it off my list.  Only desire a few more pairs at this point.

Funny. Picked up a nice Italian 20 ga over&under at Christmas. I have both afflictions.

I only noticed because that person was also wearing what I think were Longbranches that night. I think I had my Fifth Streets with my SWIMS over them that night.

This awesome thread is how I found this forum, which I haven't even looked at yet.

It is amazing to see so many others with the same addiction as me, and a few of the retentive tendencies as well :).

I'll post "my story" when I have a little more time.

Meanwhile I will continue catching up on the 3600+ posts just in this thread.

Welcome! Make sure to post some pictures of your shoes!

Well, you guys have me hooked. Haven't even worn the ones that came Monday to work yet because of snow, and just ordered bourbon Strands. I'm addicted. There's a monkey on my foot!

Yeah, I found it a bit weird, too. Again, it's not a huge size difference, just - - - different. That's the only way I can describe it. Maybe it has to do with the Black Hills being made in a much softer calfskin than these other two. Width-wise, all 3 of these are spot-on. Length-wise, the ball of my foot is hitting the right spot. It's just that both the Strand and the Mctavish feel a bit "emptier" right under the tongue. I've got them both laced down with just about 0 gap on it and it's a pretty decent fit, just not as close and comfortable as the Black Hill. If I gave it a 1/4" or 3/8" gap, it doesn't feel quite right. Again, no heel-slippage at all, but I do get a slight bowing on the sides, which everyone seems to agree is an issue of the foot not being voluminous enough to fill the shoe. It's just that the blucher on the Black HIll has a perfectly acceptable-looking lacing gap on it and no bowing.

I got fitted on the Strand this past summer and a 12D is what felt the best to me at the AE store. I think I'm going to chalk it up to it being right around 0 today and that cold weather means my feet aren't as big as they are in the summer months. I'll wear the Mctavish around the house for a bit with a slightly thicker pair of socks before making a decision on it. I really like the shoes, but I want to really LOVE them. I've got an old pair of TBNY that look similar, but are getting ready to give up the ghost (don't judge me, I found them lightly used over a year ago at a thrift store for $10 and have gotten way more than my money's worth on them). The Mctavish is all set to replace them in my rotation.

BTW, I know the gray Black Hills don't get a lot of love from most folks, simply because they feel it's a tough shoe to figure out what to wear, and belts are hard to match to it. All I can say is, it's a GREAT winter shoe for Chicago with that sole. Sure, it's casual (all the Black Hills are), so I think it rocks best with blue jeans. I'd feel fine wearing it with chinos as well. In some lights it looks gray, in others, it's kind of brown. Almost like a Weimaraner's fur. Really underrated, in my opinion and that $97 Shoebank price is ridonkulous for something this good for winter. I debated a long time on the Mctavish seconds at $149 and the walnut Black Hill at $159. Went with the Mctavish simply because, at some point, winter will end. I'm sure of it.

Ha!  I tried those gray black hills too!  The black hills are so comfortable.  I debated forever on these but finally returned them.  Like you said, the price is insane but I knew whenever I wore them, I would always regret missing them in black.  No matter how I looked at them, I just couldn't see how the gray would work.  Happy to hear you put them to good use.  The McTavish is awesome, hope you enjoy them as much as I do.  Really hope you didn't get those in gray also....

Received my Brooks Brothers Park Aves today. I usually wear 10 E on the 5 last and the BB PA are tight overall. I will exchange it with a 10.5 -- should I go with the same width or D?

Thanks

The shoe to have.  I have the Walnut, Oxblood, Black and a brown Suede/Leather MTO.  It's not for everyone but I love them.

It appears to be very true to color walnut though...my guess is that they havent seen much AE Walnut polish yet..i could be wrong of course, but i know my walnuts have turned more of an orangey hue over time with polishing.
