however, if you want shells with the most shine, then aldens would be hard to beat. from my experience, none of my ae shells emit gloss like those of alden shells.

then again, gloss may not be the best thing since slice bread though as I notice shine to be an unneccessary distraction, especially in formal conversations/ meetings / or what not - so gloss, in my opinion, is really a preference rather than a quality attribute.

on another note, rocking the shell dundees today and can hardly wait for the shell townleys in the mto program to arrive!

I am thankful that there is no local retailer here that sells Alden, because given my newfound affinity for shoes, especially shell shoes, that temptation is the last thing I need. Also, in line with what you said, I do wear my pair of Cambridge with suits since they work well with my charcoal and navy wardrobe, and I know I'd be self-conscious if they were too shiny. Very, very valid point.

I have yet to wear my Strands with a suit, but the calf (black) Park Aves and Cambridge sees good use in this regard.

Very good to see you here, J! This thread, along with the watch thread per the usual, is where I spend most of my time online. I mostly lurk, but do try to contribute where I can. Looking forward to those pics! biggrin.gif

My right captoe has that orange action like in your 1st pix.  I think mine have lightened up some. The leather around the laces is like brown tannish. Really love how the color is/has changed on these. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

They look great. In the second pic they look identical to my walnut pair. My brown shell Strands are pretty dark, at least for now, but if they start lightening up they are going to be identical to the walnuts. In certain lighting they are already pretty similar:

However, right now there is a huge color difference in person that I hope remains over time..

AE should hire @CMT1 as their official photographer

Others with more experience may correct me, but I imagine that the more they get worn and creased, the more some of the infused fats express through the leather, which is what will give it the glossy look. I tend to think that buffing the bloom around your strands is likely what is making them more shiny.

Though anyone is free to contradict me. @tifosi@Cold Iron@mdubs
I never really thought about it, but I guess that makes sense. Because when you brush you are bringing oils to the surface...so I assume cordovan bloom is those same oils.

Sounds feasible to me!

Yes, the bloom is a preponderance of the oils seeping to the surface. Brushing as you state bring the oils up and helps to provide the Shell shine. I avoid product and just do mainly brushing and buffing to get my shine. My Walnut Shell Strands always just want to glow. They definitely were a little more muted when I first got them. My recently made pairs of Brown Shell Strands seem to have an acrylic finish applied to it, so it shines quite a bit out of the box.

Either way all of these shell shoes are looking great. The Strand is a fantastic design and looks magnificent in Shell.

Yeah, if you like Shell Cordovan, then you definitely want to avoid purchasing Aldens. I wear my Shells with suits all the time. I love Burgundy/Color 8 with Navy. Killer combination. I don't find Aldens to be too shiny. Their shell is nothing close to patent leather.

Good morning all! A quick update on the trunk show, with more to follow later this afternoon: I just got back from a few days of meetings in MPLS, so I haven't been as prompt at returning emails as I'd like. Apologies for that. I have a conference call with the head of production in about two hours in which we will hammer out a few details regarding the upcoming trunk shows. I'm hoping to get an update on the supply of limited colors, including the estimated number of pairs we can produce. We are really prioritizing the shows in Chicago and NYC and plan on allocating these limited colors accordingly: 1/3 to Michigan Ave, 1/3 to 44th St and same to Madison Ave. These are the three shows that Skip and Paul will be at so we want to make sure customers at these shows are taken care of. Orders that have been called in to Michigan Ave will be first in line for our show. I'll fill you guys in after the call on total pairs and any other details we cover. Thanks so much for the enthusiastic response thus far!

So are the other shows not happening then if all the allotment will go to the 3 stores mentioned? Would seem odd if I showed up to the Atlanta one on the 20th to view all the cool new colors and not being able to order anything. It would be nice to order from the local SA to keep them happy and on the look out for me. However between this and the GMTO by shoe budget will be done for a few months.

I'm sure it will all be hashed out later today but just playing a little DA.

I am sure the Horween and Paul tandem are quite sure they will have enough shell.

The shell shortage is about as real as as the 82 Bordeauxs in vegas.

So here's the update:

There will be sample shoes in each color in Chicago and NYC. All other shows will have swatches on hand.

The limit is 25 pairs of each color per store.

The South Coast show has been moved to San Francisco Embarcadero.

I'll have images of each hide shortly and will post as soon as I receive it.

FYI: Natural has been the most pre ordered color in my store, by far (i think 12 pairs) so get orders in asap.

Ryan,

Thanks for the update on the program. That is a pretty fair allotment for each store in my opinion. I don't feel as in a such a huge rush then and can wait till I hear back from my SA who I know won't leave me hanging.

Did you get any more clarification or confirmation on the other aspects of the shoes such as welt color etc?

They're currently available online. They seem to be more of a seasonal boot.

Carl,

They provided confirmation on that earlier this week (admittedly I have been talking to them via the phone as well, so they may not have posted). Yes, we can stylize the welts and edging to our preference.

Agreed.  From my phone conversations (and my subsequent order), this is an MTO - just without the fee.  You can alter the usual variables to your taste and preference.

Well, all of this frenzy has been enough to get me to pull the trigger on a phone order.  Here are the specs:

Natural shell Strand

Flat chili welt

Medium brown transparent edge

Wheeled and fudged

Independence insole and outsole

I didn't ask Ryan but I'm guessing I could still change a spec between now and the 10th if I wanted . . . any further suggestions from y'all?

I'm on the fence as to whether to do a natural shell MacNeil as well . . . maybe seven MacNeils are enough?
