I've seen others say the same...the issues are usually very tolerable, and, you can make changes to the shoe like, diy-mto smile.gif and the outcome is still $ smart for shell.

For $325, nothing on shoe bank should last long.  In my size, they are pretty limited, fortunately.

How are you customizing seconds? I thought the shoes were already built?

I am hoping to alter them via $135 recrafting, but saw Fat Tuesday mention another third party.

I picked up cordovan Daltons a bit pre-sale and plan on sending them to B Nelson to change the welt, sole and edging.  I called it my DIY MTO.  My total investment will be significantly under the retail price and vastly under the individual MTO price.

You do know that recrafting before a new sole/welt is really needed prematurely ages the upper?

Yes, I was warned by AE.  Not a big fear for me as I wear footwear items on a few week rotation so it will be quite awhile before another resoling.

I think they are a good deal at $325 but a better deal as I like them at $460.

I am an 8.15-8.25D on Brannock

I wear 8.5D/E on the 5-65, and went with 8.5E for the Eagle County.

I wear 8.5D Strands. I've tried 8.5D and 9D Daltons; the former is simply too tight on the toes, but 9D works well. I wouldn't be surprised if 8.5E/EEE worked well, too, however.

What size are yours? I feel that the toe-cap looks so much different between the different sizes.

They are a 10.5 D.  My Brannock size is 10.5D, which is what I wear in the 7, 8, and 4 last.  I wear a 10 E in the 5 last.

And yes, I think the toe-cap is a little narrower looking in the 10.5D 7 last vs the 10 E 5 last.

I should point out that AE's for JAB are on sale for really good prices right now

As far as I can tell, they are the exact same as the PA, except that they are on the 97 last.  I can tell no difference in quality from other AE.  They came in AE shoe bags, in an AE box, they have AE branding (NOT JAB), and they shipped from Port Washington.

Thanks kentyman and Cold Iron! Despite my complaints, I am still really happy that I got them, especially after waffling about them for several months.

Here is a picture straight out of the box.  This is in low light, but it shows how dark they are compared to others.

Also, how is shell supposed to feel? The right boot is smooth and seemed to have a little shine, so I just brushed them.  The left, however, I thought had bloom after kentyman's comment. I wiped them down with a damp cloth, used a tiny amount of Glen Karen conditioner, and brushed for a good 45 minutes while watching TV.  Even after that, they are still dull and feel almost sticky.  What am I doing wrong?

I'm not so sure your doing anything wrong.. When you brush them make sure to first wipe them down with a damp rag, then brush. I usually don't go for more than 10 minutes or so before starting over again with a damp rag then brushing again if they need it. Some shell comes from the factory where the finish is different on one than the other and it takes a lot of work to get them to match. If after a couple of water brushing sessions you can't get the finish the same on both I would contact Allison at AE and explain your situation, BNIB, last pair of new walnut shell known, etc. Good chance that you can get them refinished for free. AE will refinish them for $50 but you shouldn't have to pay that for new shoes and likely will not have to.

OK, thanks. You'd have to think, if they're having a sale just for shell 2nds, they might have a bit of an excess right now. For any of us hoping to get some, let's hope so anyway.
