I don't think they necessarily care about having all the classic bases covered at the expense of keeping the production line efficient.

I swear there's no single shoe (but Strand perhaps) that I'd want to buy. Their LWB options are either black MacNeil (sic! just one color) and Banchorie, which also seems to be a closeout and for which I never cared. The PTBs options narrow down to the Leeds in black and Gridiron in pebble grain, unless I am missing something.

While their bases aren't covered, they keep throwing gazillion new styles that don't seem to resonate with virtually anyone every season.

There's also Larchmont, but it's a little too sleek to be considered a classic LWB.

But seriously, we aren't seeing the numbers. AE sells a ton of shoes, and I'll wager that shoe afficionados that care about filling all bases make up a rather small percentage of the whole.

Besides, there are always other brands.

And also, we haven't seem the fall lineup yet. There may well be a new LWB, PTB, or saddle.

I picked up the "classic" burgundy/black calf shelton when I heard that was going to be out. That's the only shoe that I had to have.  I would hope that AE brings back a shortwing like the player (in dk brown) or some former iteration.  They really need a sleek shortwing IMO.

I don't pretend to be a market researcher, but I do not understand why AE just does not stick to the classic MacNeil and Leeds? Consider just one example. Instead of making one classic LWB (MacNeil) perhaps on a few different lasts, within the past two years they released Aberdeen, Larchmont, Banchorie and maybe something else that I don't even recall. Not only did they discontinue all three, but they also eliminated the walnut and pebble grain options for the MacNeil! I just don't get it.

Cleaning the goop off my shell Leeds...not sure why sell something as Burgundy then cake so much stuff on them that they look brown...I put them next to my brown BB Strands and really they were not that far off...1/2 bottle of renomat and a shit load of renovator and I probably am about 1/2 way there...time to rest

I do not think these will ever be the color I imagined but oh well - still a great shoe

I have actually been trying to snag a pair on sale for a while now, just missed my size the other day over at haberdash when they were around $260

The Anniversary sale really is pretty poor this time round.

They are worth every penny even at full price IMO. They have a high quality suede and literally feel like wearing slippers. I am actually wearing mine today

AE makes some fantastic shoes that can/should be staples in every man's shoe armada.  The problem is that, at least over the past few years, they seem to be trying too hard to come up with all sorts of new and innovative "twists" on good ideas, resulting often in disaster.  I applaud them for the effort and for trying to think outside the box; however, I feel like they could put a little more of their efforts into ensuring they had designs that were more solid before marketing/producing them, rather than just coming out with a dozen new awful styles at once.

Take, for example, the recent student project where they had 4 finalists.  All 4 models were absolutely hideous, and yet they ostensibly plan on manufacturing at least one of them and selling them.  Granted, that may be a limited time/edition type deal, but still.

Edit: I should say that I actually really like the idea of students or whoever designing shoes to see who comes up with the best one.  I think it encourages young people to exercise creativity, and gives AE an opportunity to directly interact with some customers (or future customers).  But when you select 4 duds as the "top 4", you're not exactly encouraging or rewarding quality design.  Slap a buckle or strap here, a bizarre pattern or different material there, and call it a day, apparently.

I'm sure people will disagree.

Don't feel too bad. A couple members' orders were cancelled, anyway. Sounds like the inventory didn't quite add up.

This has happened me to me twice, on separate occassions. It wasn't a big deal to me, but I just wish Haberdash had a better inventory tracking system. In a nut shell, don't hold your breath when buying from Haberdash amid a sale promotion. They're great guys though, very helpful on the phone.

When the 744 first came out most people posted a concern that it would suffer from what they called the bulbous toe of the 721. But the shape of the toe on the 721 is exactly what I liked about it, and many work boots. There are several threads on SF where people are using a hammer to try and flatten toes on their boots or putting them in a vise overnight, I don't get it. I am hoping that Wolverine will release another shell boot soon too as they fit my feet very well, or at least have up to this point.

A great mystery to me too.. but as you know it is worth it. Took many years to get all the goop off my burgundy shell Leeds using just water brushing and Mac method before Renovator was readily available.

Picked up burgundy Dundees when they first came out and it was soon after Paul had announced the new shell finish and that the master burnisher at AE was being dedicated to shell. They showed up caked in solid goop. It took me a full weekend to get it all off and expose the work of the master burnisher. He went to all the work to finish the boots then handed them off to someone who covered up all his work.

My Cambridge's are the only burgundy shell that wasn't covered in cream from the factory, I think maybe because they were afraid of filling in all the perforations.

^^ They certainly weren't afraid of that on my Cambridge.

They have been on my list of wants for a while, one day the right opportunity will come up to snag a pair. I know better than to settle though now.

Come to think of it, I even had an order cancelled the only time I ever tried to buy something from there. it was a pair of 1000 miles during a 25% off one item sale last year, sounds like they really need to re-evaluate their inventory system if this is a regular thing during sales.

Yea, I got an order in then they disappeared. Which usually doesn't bode well. Sure enough. No stock. Was disappointing to say the least. But some suede Patriots and new Walnut Shell Daltons eased the suffering.
